Hold Physician In Hotel Slaying Near Death After Poison
A 19 year old physician, suspected in the Cedar Rapids hotel murder of Byron Hartman, fell unconscious after taking poison in St. Louis. Hartman was stabbed during a struggle in the hotel while in town on business for Emerson Electric Co. Police suspect a motive linked to Hartman’s closeness to the doctor’s wife and are questioning her husband, Robert Rutledge, who was arrested and later collapsed en route to police headquarters. Authorities consider robbery as a possible motive due to an empty billfold found beside the body.
