Washington dec 17 the senate approved the Hay Pauncefote isthmian canal treaty by a decisive 72 to 6 vote after nearly five hours of debate. Teller led the opposition with others including Clay Mason and Culberson speaking for and against the ratification. Amendments by Bacon and Culberson were defeated as were references to neutrality and sovereignty. A separate note reports Schley and Rayner disputing findings and possible further legal action, with secretary Long delaying approval pending objections.

Fireman F M Riley of Dubuque was killed and Engineer William Norton of Dubuque suffered a broken leg in a three-train collision on the Great Western road at Bolton five miles from Freeport Illinois early Sunday. The freight, a light engine and a wrecking train collided head on with the light engine in the middle striking the freight. the engineer leaped from his engine and was lost in the wrecking train where the fireman died.
