In Chicago on December 16 officials of three railroad unions reported their 159 000 members are voting about 95 percent in favor of a strike if government mediation fails. The Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers, Switchmen's Union of North America, and Brotherhood of Firemen and Enginemen seek a 30 percent wage rise and rule changes. Mediation exchanges began November 20 after failed direct talks, with the National Mediation Board opening conferences November 24 and offering arbitration if talks break down.
