Cedar Rapids Iowa report says Mrs Ruth Kurtz age unknown died from burns received in a home fire early yesterday morning. Firemen believe a cigarette caused the blaze and that she may have fallen asleep in a chair not waking until clothing caught fire. She died several hours later.
Dr Eugene Owen, 51, died suddenly Friday morning in Wesfield Indiana. He recently moved from Washington DC to Westfield for a teaching position. He was a son of the late C C Owen and Mrs C C Owen, and his mother died at Westfield on September 5. The family had formerly lived in West Chester and he graduated from Washington High School.
Ohio tops the nation in capacity to produce both electric furnace steel and Bessemer steel, indicating a strong industrial base in steel production across methods.
Icy surfaces from drizzle and a freezing night caused slick pavements and walks with one reported crash. Henry Eisenkramer of Mt. Pleasant and Bernard Waechter of Sigourney collided on the hill east of Ainsworth as Waechter's car skidded into Eisenkramer's. Mrs. Eisenkramer suffered a cut lip and a head bump, while both cars were not badly damaged.

Mrs. Ella Salterberg aged 76 widow of W F Salterberg died at 1 15 this morning in the county hospital after a heart condition illness since last February. She lived at 602 East Harrison street and funeral services are set for 2 PM Wednesday at L A Jones funeral home with Dr Fred E Miller officiating. Burial will be at Elm Grove cemetery. She was born February 28 1870 in Hutch Creek township and married December 25 189? near Valley. survived by one daughter Irene Sehneider of Washington, two sons Karl J Packwood and William M Salterberg of Washington, two sisters Belle Hill Ruthven IA and Nora Kracaw Mt Pleasant IA, and three grandchildren.
Commander Boyd White of Leon Beatty post American Legion asks for gifts to the Gifts for Yanks drive, which ends this week. Boxes in Spurgeons J C Penney and local drug stores accept toilet articles stationery handkerchiefs clothing games and tobacco for veterans at Knoxville Iowa hospital.

United Press survey shows 42 of 86 Iowa legislators favor creating a county assessor office in every county with city assessors in larger towns. The plan, recommended by the State Postwar Taxation Study committee, would replace township assessors with non partisan, four year full time officials earning at least the county auditor’s pay. Some support it for economy and equity, others oppose changing the system or doubt township staff cannot handle duties.
Pleasant Hill Sunday School elected Lawrence Kephart as superintendent and Charles Cannon as assistant. Harold Gannon became secretary-treasurer with Dale Caldwell as assistant. Cradle roll head is Mrs. Charles Cannon. Other appointees include Clyde Lambert Carl Sehneider Joli Gammon and Mrs John Gammon. Other officers are appointive and installation will follow at the regular meeting in Jiaaie.

Rev. Paul K. Wells begins as pastor of a Washington Baptist church, returning from 20 months as an army chaplain in the Pacific. Chamber of Commerce officials announce Washington shops selling Christmas merchandise will stay open Friday evening this week and Monday evening next week until nine. Stores also open Saturday evening until ten. Most shops close Christmas Eve Tuesday December 24.
West Chester pupils from the grades and high school will present a Christmas program at the high school Wednesday evening starting at eight o'clock.
An audience at United Presbyterian church heard Maunder's Bethlehem cantata sung by a 40 voice choir under Carolyn Hamilton. Soloists Alice Bedelan Henry Eisenkramer Franklin LeBar and others performed with organ piano and junior choir. An anonymous $200 gift funded voice training and musician support.
A marriage license was issued at the courthouse this afternoon to Keith Kirkpatrick and Marilyn Ruegsegger of Washington. Another license was granted Saturday to Carroll W. Dorothy and Eva B. Parker of Batavia.
Frank R. Creedon officially took over as Housing Expediter with a promise of swift action on President Truman's housing program. He conferred with top staff and signaled orders to implement changes that end the $10,000 sales price ceiling and allow non veterans to build homes. Norton E. Long resigned as deputy, criticizing the policy as a non veteran, non housing plan.
Funeral services for Mrs. Anna Witthoft were held yesterday afternoon at Sherman's funeral home led by Rev. Milo Phillips. Burial followed in King Grove cemetery with pallbearers Ervin Koenig Clarence Witthoft Milo Eckhardt Carl Ropers Arthur and Ralph Witthoft.
