A Georgia planter J D Woodall reports three black workers and two night riders wounded amid tensions. Whites oppose Woodall as night riders target his tenants. he asks the governor for troops to maintain peace.
Two of thirteen men entombed by the Tacoma Virginia mine explosion survived by making a hole in a small air pipe. Leapman and Swete reached the air and led a mule to safety while others perished. Eight men died near the air pipe as rescuers recovered victims and women cried outside.
Denver reports twelve men entombed at Leyden Coal shaft No 2 after a fire. The Leyden mine near Leyden, fourteen miles west of Denver, is feared to have caused multiple fatalities.
Fire in Fairbanks on December 16 endangered the city, wiping out nine buildings and causing about 120 thousand dollars in losses. With temperatures at 50 below zero, firefighters suffered injuries and several were hospitalized. Water supply failed, relying on steam heated mains. About two thousand residents aided by moving goods onto the ice of the Tanana River.
In Milner district Georgia three weeks of terror by masked riders leave over thirty black residents whipped. Negro defense groups confront riders at Ed Atwater home sparking a battle in which Atwater is killed and another rider dies. Local troops were asked to restore order.
Chicago reports plan to raise 500000 dollars to sustain 50000 garment workers through winter. The Chicago Federation of Labor and allied bodies back the strike and promise full support against Hart Schaffner and Marx and other firms. If funds reach target, employers may concede to closed shop terms demanded by the strikers.
In Chicago on December 16 a riot near Grand Street and Bloomingdale Road left one striking garment worker dead and another gravely wounded, with several police officers and sympathizers injured. Detective Sergeant Weinicke shot two of the strikers and was badly beaten, later taken to St. Elizabeth hospital with possible skull fracture.
Five hundred dead and eight hundred cases reported across Madeira Island amid a cholera outbreak. Authorities tally 800 cages as residents revolt, accusing the government of refusing aid while bodies fill the streets and graves are dug in the city.
Silas Sabalainen a trammer at the Pittsburg and Lake Angeline plant in Neganeea fell 650 feet from an ascending cage. He suffered total injuries with every bone broken and may have died of heart failure during the fall. He was 22 years old and unmarried.
A blaze at 428 Central avenue, Connersville, Indiana damaged the Parry Griffith building about $500 and Braun and Kehl clothing stock about $2,500. The east end of the same building was blown by a gas explosion on December 14, 1898, killing four men. The fire’s cause remains unknown.
Lexington reports Star Pointer the famed pacing horse died at age 21 at the home of owner W. H. Williams in Columbia Tennessee. The horse, except for Dan Patch, is noted as the fastest pacing colt bred by science.
Washington today reports that War Secretary Dickinson plans a third statement on national defenses. The draft will remove sensational data and opinions from prior reports, aiming for a harmless summary. House and White House discussions continue amid accusations of conspiracy to push large military appropriations.
General William Booth founder of the Salvation Army is reported to be suffering from blindness. The longtime leader and organizer of the international charity movement is described as unable to see, prompting renewed appeals for support and prayers.
New York reports the American League special committee led by Ban Johnson approves Robert L. Hedges selling 65 percent of the St. Louis Browns to a syndicate organized by R. M. Hodgman. Hedges would net about 535000 and retire from baseball amid questions about his health and the team’s performance.
Bridgeport Conn Dec 16 according to unofficial returns here National President T L Lewis has been re elected president of the United Mine Workers of America. Returns indicate a majority of 30000.
Washington police uncovered a bold blackmail plot involving Mrs. James B. Knott her husband Benjamin Knott his brother Alton A. Armstrong and a partner. Complainant Henry Rosenthal says he was coerced at gunpoint to sign a $5 000 check. authorities staged a payoff at a store leading to arrests and pending witness processing.
London reports General Booth head of the Salvation Army will shortly undergo an operation for cataract on his left eye. He had a prior operation on the right eye that temporarily restored sight but failed, now the left eye cataract has blinded him and he hopes for full restoration.
A lone bandit robbed the state bank at Paradise Kansas and carried off 2500. He bound the cashier and four other men with rope and fled. The thief bought a rifle and ammunition at a hardware store before riding away north. Weather across Illinois Indiana Wisconsin remained fair and warmer with variable winds.
The Chicago market report lists 1910 receipts at about 15,000 with 15,843 left over. Hog prices range from 7.30 to 7.75 with light hogs at 7.35 to 7.70 and heavy shipping grades 7.30 to 7.70. Cattle at 1,500 with a 10 point rise expected. sheep at 8,000 with strong prospects.
Receipts estimated at 15000 hogs today with 20513 yesterday official receipts and 6015 shipments. Cattle and sheep markets show steady to slow activity with price ranges from 4 00 to 5 70 for Western cattle and 2 40 to 6 30 for Western sheep, with rough and heavy grades listed.
Consul Edwards cables to Washington alleging Mexican regulars killed prisoners after the Cerrero Prieto battle. Initial Mexican reports said 14 dead on the government's side and 60 rebels killed or wounded, but later claims say many insurgents were shot after surrender, with at least 35 of 60 rebels executed.
