Rock Island train No. 4 the Golden State Limited wrecked in the Ainsworth yards around 5 am. Three rear cars left the track and ploughed into the ground then on their sides. No serious injuries. conductor Wm. Newall and wife bruised but safe.
A Pullman car involved in a morning wreck in Ainsworth caught fire this afternoon due to an acetylene explosion. The local fire company acted quickly and saved the car and its two neighboring cars from total loss.
The billiards wizard Willie Hoppe married Miss Alice B Walsh at the cardinal's residence in Baltimore. Miss Walsh, 21, is the New York daughter. Hoppe is 23. The couple eloped after her father refused consent though he approved of Hoppe. Their acquaintance began in Atlantic City where Hoppe once saved her from drowning.
Ross H. Stapleton George Brooks Robert Robinson James F P Tomey William B Gunn James Randolph Gunn were found guilty of intimidating or night riding B S Comstock a government homesteader. Sentences deferred pending notice of appeal after a three day trial before the United States court.
Mrs. Aileen Christopher, once the government’s chief witness in the brick trust case, starts a 30 day sentence in county jail for contempt after denying possession of papers she later admitted she had. Her attorney, John A. Brown, begins a 70 day sentence at the same time.
The state of Illinois collected 610 009.68 from Illinois Central Railway for road earnings in the six months ending Oct 31 1910. This brings the 1910 total to 1 217 927.88, with the peak year payment 1 288 536.12 in 1907. Since 1855 total state receipts amount to 20 602 798.60.
Paul A. Miller, once an interpreter in Manila in 1899 and Spanish American War veteran who speaks eight languages, was arrested as a vagrant for begging. His failing eyesight led to his loss of position and he was sent to the National Soldiers' Home in Milwaukee.
In Washington Indiana a four year old girl, daughter of Hugh Holt, fell into an open grate while playing in a room. She suffered burns over her entire right side and is believed to be in fatal condition. Mrs Holt also burned while trying to extinguish the flames.
Six men drowned when a closed-cabin launch carrying seventeen people from the Stimson logging camp capsized in a swift Snohomish River current near Marysville on December 15. Six survivors escaped via windows or the upturned hull as others clung to the roof. Names of the deceased include Victor Bachman Oscar Bachman Reinholt Sebes William Erickson Victor Berg and Victor Leval.
A moving van carried away valued merchandise from 8S Silberman & Sons at 1117 West Thirty-fifth Street in Chicago. Police say burglars used a skeleton key to open a rear door and loaded 4200 mink skins 100 weasel skins and nearly 100 pounds of ginseng into a wagon, taking place within three blocks of the Thirty-fifth police station. The theft occurred between midnight and 6 AM and involved deliberate planning.
The burglary was discovered after 7 o clock when employees arrived and found the rear door open. A key was used to gain entry and the stolen goods were kept in the rear of the store, suggesting at least one thief knew the premises. Captain Storen and Captain Wood organized detectives to investigate.
Hunters Bailey, Herbert, and Keasler of Highland Falls spotted a man in tattered rags near Doodletown while tracking strange footprints. The fugitive ran toward the mountains, sought refuge in a cave, and remained pursued by the trio.
The secretary of state issued a license to incorporate the Chicago Terre Haute and Southeastern Railway company of Indiana with capital stock of 4 300 000. The Illinois headquarters is Chicago and the capital stock in Illinois is 1 434 000.
A captured man escaped from Doodletown school house after being overpowered by pursuers. He fled via the Hile trail to Queensboro and Brookshollow, then disappeared. He spoke little in captivity, grew weak, and a recent report tied him to Bear Mountain prison escapees seen by hunters. No one has dared approach him in the mountain retreat.
