Washington reports its second home fire in a week as Hubert Walker’s residence on West Fifth Street burned in an upstair bathroom and bedroom. Firemen, wearing masks, contained the blaze. damage estimated to exceed $1,000, likely caused by an overheated hot air pipe.
A warming trend thawed the South as Great Lakes snow diminished. Yet four days of subfreezing weather caused massive crop losses in Florida and South Carolina with hundreds dead nationwide. Disaster designations and loans offered amid citrus damage and insurance claims totaling millions.
Francis McConnell, chairman, says the Washington County Extension Council has arranged a move to larger facilities at 209 South Marion Avenue. The offices will relocate in late January after redecorating and remodeling the interior.

In Paris NATO ministers reaffirmed mutual defense and readiness to negotiate with Russia while boosting conventional and nuclear forces. They praised U S actions over Cuba and urged European members to strengthen defenses amid unresolved issues including Skybolt, France’s independent force, and East West talks. The Skybolt dispute loomed as U S and Britain debated options before a Bahamas meeting of Kennedy and Macmillan.
NASA officials planned new transmission tests for the Relay satellite after a postponed intercontinental TV test due to weak battery power. Engineers hoped the 172 pound moon could regain voltage as it orbits, with tests resuming around the 12th orbit and a forerunner pattern for an 11 nation Christmas pageant.

A Flying Tiger Constellation freighter crashed in dense fog near Lockheed Air Terminal, killing nine known victims including four crew and others in nearby homes and factories. James R. Hoffa testified in his $1 million conspiracy trial denying government charges that he took payments from Commercial Carriers Inc. to settle a nationwide car-hauling strike. He said he never entered an agreement with the firm and argued dividends from Test Fleet were loans repaid to his wife.
United Press International reports Iowa scenes partly cloudy tonight and Sunday with warmer southeast. Lows 20s north to 32 south, highs Sunday 45 to 55, then continued mild Monday amid some cloudiness.
