U N guards killed 2 and wounded 124 in a mass mutiny at Pongam Prison Camp No 10 on Pongam Island near Korea. About 3 600 of 9 000 internees participated in six compound uprising as guards used riot guns to restore control.
President Truman warned that Americans risk destroying the liberty they seek to protect if fear of Communism leads to suppressing rights at home. He spoke at the dedication of a fireproof bombproof National Archives shrine housing the Declaration of Independence the Constitution and the Bill of Rights.
Three American airmen were killed when a B 45 twin jet bomber crashed in flames near the Fuerstenfeldbruck base in Germany. Two others parachuted to safety as the crash occurred Sunday. names of the dead were being withheld pending next of kin notification.

One son William Hagie Jr died last January and two infant children also died.

Donald Webster crashed near Ayrshire. Sherry Rice was accidentally shot in Lenox Park near Burlington.
Funeral services for Mrs Fate Van Zanten will be held Tuesday afternoon at the Brighton Methodist church with Rev EE Vest in charge. Burial will be in Brighton Hillcrest cemetery. She died Friday in Phoenix Arizona after visiting a son there.
Amos Mellinger II a Kalona lumber businessman died Sunday at 11 15 a m at his home. Services were held Wednesday at Holy Trinity Catholic Church Richmond with Rev W F Boeckmann. Burial in Sharon Hill cemetery. Surviving are his son Amos III, a sister Mrs Gertrude Myers and two grandchildren.
Des Moines Iowa William S Lynes of Waverly won the Republican caucus for speaker of the Iowa House in a seven way contest. He led on the final ballot 52 to 51 over Lawrence Putney of Gladbrook amid a 105 108 Republican majority and will likely be re elected when the legislature opens January 12.
