Woman and children flee flames in Iowa housing fire
Mrs. Calvin Combs escaped a fire at the Veterans Housing project in Red Oak by dropping her two children Eugene aged 2 and Kenneth aged 4 from a six foot bedroom window after a match thrown into a clothes closet started the blaze. She then crawled out herself and alerted neighbors for help.

Destructive Farm Fire Claims Pigs and Grain North of Washington
A fire at the Raymond Bell farm eight miles northeast of Washington destroyed a large hog house with about 110 recently weaned pigs and an assortment of shelled corn oats and car corn. More than 100 head of swine and several thousand bushels of grain were lost in the blaze. Neighbors aided firefighters from Riverside and Washington as the barn and crib structures burned. The origin is undetermined but suspected defective wiring. The Bell family planned to move March 1 and insurance covers the loss.
