A Waterloo column notes Rath Packing Co Employees walked out in sympathy with mechanics and electricians in a dispute over plant duties. Officials from the company and the CIO refused to comment. Union directs workers to report to the plant for possible resumption if the dispute settles.
Four railroad workers from Clarion were killed and two injured when an engine and caboose collided head on with an eastbound freight one and one half miles west of Carroll in a deep cut on a curve. One victim was a navy veteran on his first trip as student fireman aboard the Great Western railroad.
Coe College in Cedar Rapids installed Byron Hallinshead as its eighth president succeeding Dean Harvey Geiger who served as acting president since 1944. Hallinshead, previously head of Keystone College, arrived with degrees from Bucknell and other institutions as educators from the Midwest and East gathered for the ceremony at T. M. Sinclair Memorial chapel.
Walter Bjork 31 and Mrs. Irvin Anderson 28 of Ramsen died after their pickup collided with an eastbound Illinois Central engine. Irvin Anderson, husband of the woman, was taken to Le Mars hospital. Coroner 8S. H. Lukens said the trio stopped for a load of feed near the railroad depot when the truck stalled.
Dr Gerritt T Vander Lugt resigns as Carroll College president to accept a similar post at Central College Pella Iowa. Vander Lugt noted the move Friday and will replace the retiring leader at Central College.
Gov Robert Elue announced 41 towns and institutions sought NHA housing for veterans. NIA said 20 inquiries led to rear tests for units with most approved. Cities approved were unnamed. The governor, who faced shortages in Des Moines, asked about federal units after Fort Dodge officials asked for 50 units.
The Pearl Harbor investigative committee read the Boise log showing the cruiser reportedly altered course and manned battle stations on sighting a Japanese warship near Guam five days before the December 7 attack. The committee noted the sighting could indicate a prior encounter with the Japanese force that struck Pearl Harbor.
C A Fullerton known as the grand old man of music and creator of the Fullerton choir plan died at his Cedar Falls home. He taught rural school music, authored several textbooks, and gained international recognition for work with one room schools. He survived by a daughter Margaret, two sons Roderick and Craig, and five brothers.
Royal engineers confirmed a two ton bomb in Croydon contained about 3000 pounds of TNT. Lt. G. A. Frake and Capt. G. Horsfall exposed the contents and prepared a neutralizing plan involving steam heating after hoisting the device from the shaft.
Moscow dispatch says Foreign ministers of the big three plan talks today if Ernest Bevin arrives as scheduled to discuss the atomic bomb and allied relations. James Byrnes stressed talks will be a exchange of views, not a pledge of restrictions. Byrnes reached Moscow after a snow storm voyage with a 10 minute gasoline reserve.
Mrs. John W. Cherry reports the local Red Cross chapter has knitted 65 sweaters since September. The sweaters were sent to headquarters for distribution through Red Cross channels. More yarn will arrive around year end and knitting will resume for children's socks and sweaters. Ella Gordon and Mrs. T F Barker assisted in the effort.
Santa Claus arrived by bus from the east at the station, invited by the Chamber of Commerce. About 200 children gathered at the Y to greet him despite zero weather and illness, receiving cranes before he prepared to depart with his horse and sleigh for street visits and stops at ill children’s homes and local stores.
Washington endured a record cold spell with temperatures dropping below zero for the first time this season. The thermometer was one above at noon, with yesterday’s high at 27 degrees above zero and a prior low of zero earlier in the week. The frigid conditions suggest the cold period will persist for some time.
The county American Legion plans a turkey dinner and meeting in Kalona next Monday evening. A Washington post drill team will handle induction of new members. Washington members to gather at Legion rooms city hall from 7:00 to 7:30 PM for the trip to Kalona.

London report says the United Nations preparatory body voted 30 to 14 to place the UN Organization headquarters in the United States. The decision reflects a split among ministers and confirms the geographic choice for the world body.
The Northeast Kalona soil conservation group of ten farmers met at the Middleburg schoolhouse to discuss erosion control and craft a farm by farm conservation plan. Topics included soil surveys land use crop rotations and treatments. Soil technicians from the Washington county soils district will assist on each farm as they work toward a long term program. The next meeting will focus on live- discussion.
A U P bulletin reports General George S. Patton has a slight but significant improvement in sensations in paralyzed limbs, with his condition described as excellent. He is alert and cheerful, out of danger barring unforeseen complications, and likely to be flown to the United States in four to six weeks for recovery.
Mrs. Rose Carlan, 28, pleads innocent to murder after her six month old son Ronald was found dead in a Chelsea apartment. Judge orders held without bail and to be observed at Boston psychopathic hospital for 10 days. Case continued to December 24.
A surprise nighttime sweep by about 8 000 London police and allied forces netted 800 deserter suspects by early today. Downtown stations were crowded with uniformed and civilian suspects, as the crackdown on the deserter racket intensified.
