The Iowa state health department reports 182 preventable diphtheria cases this year with a rise from 9 in October to 39 in November and at least 7 more in early December. Thirteen counties contributed to the increase.
Iowa lawmakers preparing for the fifty first general assembly will receive C book gasoline rations but with limits. State office of price administration has arranged a general mileage allowance of 450 miles per month, enabling most to make two trips home monthly.
DES MOINES Iowa Tuberculosis Association reports 68 cities show early 1944 Christmas Seal sales up 35.5 percent over last year. Through Dec 9 total is 69284.68 versus 51188.21 a year ago. Burlington leads with 74.3 percent gain, Des Moines at 71.8 percent.
James J. Dilliver leaves next week for Washington to take office as Iowa's sixth district representative. Mrs Dilliver and their three children will accompany him. A son James is a naval aviation cadet finishing flight training at Pensacola. The Dollivers will live in Chevy Chase district where Mrs Dolliver found a home.
OMATLA Neb services in Kansas City for J N Wilkerson 77 recall Iowa Villisca axe murders of 1912. Wilkerson once joined the investigation as a detective aiding an accused man who was later acquitted. The Villisca killings left eight people dead and remain unsolved despite claimed confessions.
DES MOINES Iowa schools must order new buses from the state department of public instruction by April 15 for delivery by September 1 for the 1945 46 school year. Paul B Norris Iowa director of rural transportation said 20 applications have already been received. The Office of Defense Transportation has allotted 129 buses to Iowa with a potential 150 available. About 90 buses have been sold in Iowa this year, exceeding the original quota of 76.
Last night’s low reached 20 degrees with a morning high of 28 degrees as warmer conditions moved in. The brief temperature uptick followed a frosty period and signals a mild trend for the day.

United Press reports a large air strike on Luzon as MacArthur forces push toward Leyte’s final phase. Carrier planes attacked Clarke Field near Manila with hundreds more over Luzon and Visayan areas, destroying Japanese planes and targeting harbor and airfield assets. Philippine-based bombers joined, sinking freighters and pressuring shipping in Manila Bay.
Postcard pictures of the 1944 tall corn world beater grown by Don Radda are on sale at the Washington drug stores and the Nicola and Harmon book store. The photo shows the tallest stalk of corn ever grown in front of the Journal office with five Washington county soldiers sailors and marines on a ladder beside it.
Alfonse Notaziacion of a Dorchester tavern owner says the tale is true. Two men lifted a hearse from an undertaker, broke into Notaziacion's store, and loaded the wagon with 900 dollars worth of liquor. The hearse was later found abandoned and empty.
