Democrats blocked a House Republican push to suspend rules and force the administrations 30 million dollar relief bill. By stalling, they opened the door to possible higher funding when the bill returns, perhaps tomorrow.
The commerce department estimated Santa will distribute as many Christmas tapes as in past peak years despite the depression. Dolls and doll parts lead toy production with $16.2 million in value, followed by wheel goods and automobiles totaling about $16 million. An A M E congregation plans a free admission concert Tuesday evening December 16 at eight o'clock in the Baptist church. Proceeds from a free will offering will support the A M E church in Washington. The program features Negro spirituals and a fitting program is promised.
Twenty four Washington high school boys took part in a double defeat of Brighton high school on a Saturday night. The second team won 39 to 7 and the first team 26 to 19. Kupka scored seven times for Washington across both games while Jimmy Wells hit two long shots in limited time. Kesey was the top scorer for Washington in the first game as the team struggled to break Brighton's defense. Muscatine is next.
County officers selected fifty petit jurors to serve for the next district court session under Judge Frank Bechly of Montezuma beginning January 6. Twelve grand jurors for 1931 were also drawn, with a long list of names from Keota Ainsworth Washington Riverside Brighton Kalona Crawfordsville Wellman West Chester and Kalona among others.
J. C. Metcalf of Anamosa who wired the Temple and Journal buildings has been awarded the electric contract for a new 225000 dollar school at Fort Dodge. Lettings occurred last week and Metcalf and foreman J. R. Lutz are involved.
On a quiet Sunday afternoon in Des Moines a crowd gathered as firemen used a hose and ladder to rescue a cat stuck on a roof on College Avenue. No flames or smoke appeared, and the cat was safely brought down after the caller alerted crews.
H E Landers alias H E Flannery was jailed in Carlinville for forgery but rushed to his mother’s bedside in Marshalltown Iowa after a doctor signed a $1000 bail bond. A physician traveling with his brother accompanied Landers aboard a fast plane toward Marshalltown after release.
Divers off Florida shores sought remains from the Eureka excursion craft which exploded. One body, Mrs. Freeman H. Sewyer of Miami, was recovered, bringing dead to five with five to eleven still missing due to differing passenger estimates.
Washington area automobile mechanics and salesmen were guests of Sitler Auto Parts Service for a chicken dinner at North Side cafe. Afterward they gathered at City Hall where factory reps spoke on drive gears universal joints fan belts brakes pistons rings timing chains and timing installation. A film showed piston ring manufacture.
The report notes that during their stay in Washington they made many friends and highlights the Fort Dodge contract as a large, significant project.

Sheriff George Strubls and County Attorney George F. Morrison took Roy D. Walters to Sigourney for arraignment before Judge D. W. Hamilton on a breaking and entering charge. Walters was later sent to the state penitentiary in Fort Madison for up to ten years after being caught attempting to break into a theatre office safe at the Fox Theatre last Friday. He had recently been released from Missouri state prison after seven years for safe blowing.
Williston North Dakota reports that 22 year old farm hand Charles Bannon confessed to killing six Haven family members. He told how he attacked each victim at their farm with a hammer. Authorities also filed murder charges against his father James J Bannon who was held by police in Toledo Oregon.
Ainsworth schedules a citywide Christmas program on December 25 with church and school unity. Local committees organize trees, music, readings, gifts, and Santa visit on Front Street near the bandstand in a community celebration inviting all residents. Temperature notes from Western Iowa list near 22 to 24 degrees.
Federal meteorologist Charles D. Reed said Christmas snow was postponed at least two days with slightly cloudy weather forecast. Sioux City had light flurries totaling .01 inches, and northern Iowa could see a small drop in temperatures as Dubuque and Davenport recorded low temps while eastern Iowa stayed mostly above freezing.
A high wind fanned a Malibu Beach blaze destroying 17 celebrity homes including Marie Prevost and Louise Fazenda. Damage was estimated between 350000 and 500000 dollars. the fire followed a September 1929 blaze that razed 11 homes and was quickly centered toward the Pacific as flames reached Miss Prevost’s residence.
Creston Iowa December 15 UP R S Murphy believed from Kansas City is jailed while police probe alleged fraud. He collected payments from laborers promising pipeline work, issuing receipts for jobs that did not exist. Murphy claimed to represent Sizith Construction of Kansas City. no such firm operates locally. Authorities say Continental Construction officials deny authorization to hire workers. Similar schemes reported in Muscatine and Chariton.
About 175 attended the Knights of Columbus Washington council Fathers and Sons banquet in Richmond. Holy Trinity parish women served a bountiful meal in Casino hall. Father Van Wans presided as toastmaster. Joe Pieper gave welcome, Father Joseph O Donnell toasted the boys, Mark Koening replied for the boys, and Attorney Paul Toomey spoke. The evening closed with America sung by men and boys.
The Y M C A will host an airplane exhibit at its New Year open house. Boys are building two kinds of planes that will fly and that won't, with prizes for the best models. A workshop will show how planes are made and a chemistry club will present experiments.
Chicks will be received on Washington public square Wednesday the 17th for a gift shipment to Chicago. Julius Enslin leads reception with records of donors for public acknowledgement. Reisters will begin cleaning after enough fowls arrive, then trucks will transport to Chicago for distribution. County growers expect at least one thousand head, with local merchants covering dressing and transport costs, inviting donations from all.
The Woman's Missionary Society of the Presbyterian church held their annual praise service Sunday evening, completing their missionary budget with the collection. Speakers included Mrs. H. McCall on praise and intercession, with incidents from the mission field presented by several members.
Madrid dispatch reports the interior minister proclaimed martial law nationwide as revolutionary forces at Cuatro Viventos airfield were declared completely dominated after government forces opened fire. Military planes dropped leaflets urging army to join the republic and warning barracks will be bombarded. Harvey Secor was fined a total of 1250 dollars and sentenced to three months in county jail by Judge Harold D. Evans in district court for liquor violations in Iowa City on December 15. The action reflects multiple violations and assigns the penalties accordingly.
I K Beal of east of Ainsworth was injured when his vehicle struck a train at Olds about five o clock Sunday evening. He suffered a broken nose and collar bone and a badly injured knee and is resting easier. He was returning from Burlington where he visited with Mrs Beal. lights blinded him as the train remained on the tracks.
The Washington Golf and Country club will host its annual Christmas party and dance at City Hall auditorium on December 25 open to members and guests. Martin Whittaker chairs the planning committee. male guests pay $1.50 for dancing privileges, with dancing, a program, and a festive social planned.
