Mrs. Victor Murphy of Des Moines learned she has been left a grocery store by F. M. Burns a 67 year old who died after a fire at the shop Mrs Murphy and her husband had helped Burns during his long illness and had tried to rescue him Friday night.
Marshalltown plans a special election on establishing a city manager system. Petitions will be prepared by the Marshalltown Chamber of Commerce to seek voter action on the plan.
Des Moines Governor Herring says a special legislative session is unnecessary to save Iowa from losing the 1936 social security payroll tax money. He believes Congress will pass a law to include Iowa in benefits despite missing the January 1, 1987 deadline.
Granger reports Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt visited last summer, offsetting absence from the first anniversary celebration to care for Marilyn Biondi and her nine siblings.
Creston men Boyles and Thomason held a week are believed linked to a gang that hijacked a liquor truck worth $250,000 from Peoria Hi Elmer Boyles. Thoma son from Springfield, Il. denies guilt and gave a false name at arrest.
Ronald Reagan escaped serious injury when his horse crashed into a guard rail at Fort Des Moines during a reserve officers rivalry. He said he missed the jump command, freed the stirrups, and the horse became confused before the crash.
Ray Myers sustained a broken ankle and considerable bruises after a three car collision in Ottumwa. He was knocked 30 feet by a driver named Clifford Donovan who had been spun around by Chesley Pickre. Navicrar slid around and struck Myers, pushing him into a car driven by Sheehan of Chillicothe. Myers was the sole injury.
The Irish Free State under President Eamon De Valera faces a potential refusal to approve King George VI following Edward VIII's abdication. If Ireland withholds approval, the dominion would sever its formal links with the British empire.

LEON L D Buckley of Des Moines was shot accidentally while hunting with three others fourteen miles southeast of here. He received first aid in Leon and was later taken to Des Moines. Buckley will lose sight of his right eye as pellets remain in his body.
Chairman R E Arthur of the U's Men's Goodfellows committee says it will take from 200 to 250 to properly fund the Christmas basket program this year. Already 25.50 has been received through the Daily Journal coupon, ten percent of the goal, with many contributions expected in coming days to keep a public running total. Local donors include Washington Teachers 15.00 Mrs J Perégee 1.59 L Hollingsworth 6.00 and others, as names may be published to maintain transparency.
Mrs Hattie Estelle Vogelgesang died this morning at seven at her son Ben L Shea’s home on South Marion avenue after two years of declining health and bedfast since November. Born November 10, 1865 in Kakanna Wisconsin, she leaves four sons Ben L Shea Washington Harold W Reid Salina Clarence C Reid Burlington and Harry K E Hawkins Oklahoma City. She also is survived by two sisters Mrs Marcia Possom Des Moines and Mrs Della Kek Stone Beloit and a brother Fred Ingamells Des Moines. Funeral plans are pending at Sherman’s funeral home.
Charles Schneider sits in Washleton county jail awaiting a district court hearing on forgery after a Saturday arrest. A preliminary hearing before Justice J K Bovee found probable cause for the charge of forging his mother's name on several checks. Schneider faces arraignment in the sixth district court this week with sheriff Harold M Putnam noting the likely date. Also before the court is Co EB Sleggel of Brooklyn Iowa held for a driving while intoxicated charge after ditching a car north of town and seeking guilty plea and sentence.
Two men identified as Joe Moore and Wiliam Thomason were held without charge in Creston as police pursue a possible link to a $5,000 liquor hijacking near Mt. Pleasant last April. Davenport police suspect Moore is Elmer Boyles of Moline Illinois, linked to the Mt. Pleasant hijacking in which Byron Melvard a truck driver from Omaha was kidnapped.
Police search for thieves who burglarized the Venice Inn last night stealing about $2,000 in cigarettes and $17 in cash. The incident occurred in Ottumwa on December 14.
Finley church east of Wayland and six miles west of Swedesburg burned to the ground. The fire, likely started in the coal room during preparations for a social and church dinner, leveled the building erected in 1900 on the site of earlier Finley structures. Neighbors helped save portions of the church and its contents.
Thomas Michael Schilling longtime Washington resident died at 1 PM at his West Jefferson Street home. He was 80, born in Maryland and had lived here most of his life after moving from Maryland. Funeral services will be Wednesday at 2 PM at Shermans Funeral Home. Surviving are his wife, one son Palmer Schilling, one grandchild and brothers and sisters Norman Gerry Mrs Sherm Crone Mrs Owen Hayes of Washington and Mrs G E Coffin Mrs George Scott and Miss Sadie Schilling of Oskaloosa.
The Supreme Court refused an injunction against KVOS in Bellingham Washington. The ruling said no $3 000 stake was shown and leaves open whether broadcasting newspaper news is unfair competition and joinable in federal court. The AP had sued alleging pirating news from a member paper.
Mrs Jack Schneider shows signs of improvement after several weeks of illness. She has been under care at home with gradual recovery noted by relatives and her physician.

Police say arrests solved seventeen auto thefts and numerous larcenies of auto accessories and gasoline over months. The boy gang operated a hidden “community” car used for “jobs” and siphoned gasoline from parked autos to keep it running.
