A British freighter Usworth capsized off Newfoundland amid heavy seas. Crews from the Belgian Jean Jadot and British Ascania saved 24 sailors, with two rescuers lost and two men missing from the Usworth crew. The vessel remained afloat as rescue efforts continued.
On December 1 Iowa had a 2,199,000 balance available for new road projects learned at the U S Bureau of Public Roads. Funds come partly from the June 16 1985 act requiring Iowa to share road costs and partly from the June 18 1984 act funding federal expenditures.
Agricultural administration reports that benefit payments to farmers in Iowa Nebraska and South Dakota under crop control programs far exceed the amount of processing taxes collected in those states.
Earl Persinger of Grundy Center Indiana averaged 102.4 bushels of No 1 corn per acre on 100 acres, a tally that would make most farmers proud in a year better than 1934.

Adolph Martens 50 of Keswick Ta will plead self defense in a murder case over the deaths of his 14 year old stepdaughter Maxine Abel and her mother Stella Martens 42 found beaten to death in the family shack the body of the girl and her mother were discovered on August 1 in Aus. 1. Martens attorney Henry Wagner announced the plan in court.
The Iowa state emergency relief administration plans rural aid by creating mushroom growing cellars in Des Moines. The proposal compares to a country pasture program as a means to rehabilitate rural areas statewide.
The cost to remove snow from Iowa primary highways since the November storms is about $20,000. W. H. Root, maintenance engineer for the state highway commission, estimated the figure. Regular crews of 1,600 men plus 500 to 400 additional workers have been employed to clear the highways.
Muscatine Frank Custer one of the last rural carriers who kept using horse transport retires December 13 after more than eight decades of service. He estimates he has driven the equivalent of one circuit around the world.

Emergency relief water had filled the gap but support has shifted as rains delay the crisis.
Funeral services set for Monday for Dr. Wilton McCarthy a 62 year old surgeon who died in Annapolis Maryland from a heart ailment. Born in Nevada Iowa he was an Iowa State and Drake University graduate and had a long medical career.
Hollywood California reports the death of W. T. Wassoner a famed oil rancher and one of the nation’s largest ranch owners. He trusted grass land over oil wells and valued good horses and fair dealing. his legacy reflects the old Western cowman’s shrewd humor and citizenship.

Washington high staged The Wedding with Gene Tucker and Ferne Crozier delivering standout performances, Ottumwa high presented Highness featuring Bernard Cohen and Ann Kutledev, and Fairfield high closed with Three's a Crowd about a date night misadventure. Music by the Littleton harmony orchestra directed by Milburn McKay accompanied the show.
In 1922 a man who fell and was injured on a pavement sued an insurance company. He pursued the case in court here twice and secured judgments of 20000 and 26000 dollars, attracting wide interest.
Senator Louis Murphy announced that $15 a week will be paid to Iowa residents employed as enumerators for the federal agricultural census starting January. Enumerators must live on farms, may be men or women, and work on a piece basis for 1 to 20 days in their district. Applications go to district supervisors.

A cigar ette caused a deadly blaze at the Kerns hotel in Lansing Michigan killing at least 32 people. The fire started in the apartment of David Monroe hotel manager and one of the victims. Fire officials cite a ten to fifteen minute delay before alarm. Eighteen bodies were identified.
In Morrison Illinois Dee 14 Mrs Harold McKee 55 awoke yawning after a drug induced sleep and has yawned for 112 hours except when asleep doctors call it a record. Since Sunday doctors have treated the patient with a routine to restore strength while she is fed a liquid by injection during sleep.
Des Moines authorities report Chairman Harold M. Cooper of the Iowa Nquor Control Commission stating he will not resign. Cooper adds he has heard nothing from Governor Herring about a request and confirms the commission will proceed with prosecutions.
Fred Downing announces a civil service exam for postmaster by the United States civil services commission. Applications close January 2. evaluation focuses on education training and fitness with 0 percent for experience. The top three eligible names go to the postmaster general for final appointment by the president. Salary cited at 2900 yearly. Washington assignment expected in 2004.

McALESTER Okla Dec 4 Relief agencies won a partial victory as 500 miners threatening a hunger strike paused their protest after being offered bread and cheese. The crowd stormed the federal emergency relief office while demanding jobs or adequate food for families. Mrs Mary McFarland and Mrs Peter Huber of Cranefordsville shopped here Wednesday.
Horace Tate of the Iowa Motor Vehicle Department cites evidence that about one million Iowans drive without licenses. He notes department revenue rose by an estimated 106000 in five months after inspectors were added, and questions the gap between registered cars and licensed drivers. He cites Pennsylvania as 2.12 drivers per vehicle and suggests at least 1.6 million licenses are needed.
