Brussels reports King Leopold III of Belgium in critical condition as a planned operation by his surgeon is set to proceed. Rheumatism dropsy and an intestinal obstruction worsen his state. physicians fear he may not endure surgery, while the king remains hopeful the long journey may end.
A St Paul strike committee member confirms a proposed compromise on wages increasing 3 cents an hour instead of 6, overtime at time and a half with holidays and Sundays included, limited changes to age limit and physical examination, and other minor adjustments in negotiations with the Switchmen Union of North America.
The general assembly of the international institute of agriculture, with forty six states and colonies, is in session in Rome. A proposal to admit the press to sittings, previously closed, was referred to a five member committee after support from the United States Italy Chile Peru and Montenegro and opposition from France and Ecuador.
Captain Thomas Franklin A S A former treasurer of the West Point military academy cadet mess fund pleaded guilty in the United States circuit court to embezzlement. He received two years and six months in prison.
The Burley Tobacco Society filed suit in the circuit court to restrain G. D. Wright of Larue County and C. A. Bridges & Co. of Louisville from selling and buying four hogsheads of tobacco shipped to Louisville. Wright allegedly shipped tobacco for sale independently of the pool. A temporary restraining order was granted.
Bellingham Washington remains without rail service after a new flood hit the Nooksack and Skagit valleys washing out many miles of track. The continued flooding threatens Arlington and disrupts travel and freight as crews assess damage.
A storm on Lake Erie doomed the car ferry Marquette and Bessemer No 2. Thirty eight people left Conneaut last Thursday, not thirty two, and all are believed frozen to death. The wreck occurred during the severe weather terrorizing the lake region.
A midnight blaze at the Third and Sycamore streets tenement in Cincinnati killed seven people including two women three children and two men and seriously injured seven others. Three of the victims were burned to ashes.

In Northeast Pennsylvania a high speed collision between the Twentieth Century Limited from Chicago to New York and passenger train No. 10 on the Lake Shore line left six dead and many feared missing. A relief train brought six dead and fifteen injured to Erie.
The Interstate Commerce Commission ruled the Omaha and Council Bluffs Railway and Bridge Co an interstate corporation subject to federal law. It found 15 cent fares between Council Bluffs Iowa and Omaha Nebraska unreasonable and ordered a two year cap of 10 cents for travel between any points in the two cities starting February 1910.
A fire leveled the Grand Opera house building in Peoria Illinois destroying the Peoria Journal and the Peoria Demokrat offices. Total losses exceed 200000 dollars.
John R. Dobbins, convicted in the T W Ballew bank robbery case, received an indeterminate sentence of up to five years in Fort Madison. He promptly appealed to the Iowa Supreme Court and was released on $5,000 bond. The court cited statements by Attorney General Byers as a defense contention in the new trial motion.
Denver, Dec. 14. W. G. Smith, former speaker of the Colorado House, files $50,000 damages suits against Judge Ben B. Lindsey of Denver and Harvey H. O'Higgins, magazine writer. Smith alleges defamation in articles titled The Beast and the Jungle now running in a popular magazine.
General J. Casement railroad constructor and philanthropist dies in Painesville Ohio after a three day illness from pneumonia. He was a prominent figure in railway development and local charity.
Onawa Iowa December 14 Reed Fletcher a middle aged man killed himself with strychnine after years of mental illness and two prior asylum stays He leaves a wife and several children.
Iowa Falls reports Judge Benson will review habeas corpus petitions filed by the Knights of Pythias seeking the release of Michael Hogan from the West Dubuque Catholic asylum. The hospital argues Hogan's commitment was legal, noting his mania depressive condition and guardianship by his wife. Hogan's own statements indicate he was unaware of the legal action. The remand to the asylum was ordered with a hearing set for December 20.
Four men are under arrest with three in Flora Illinois and one in Xenia Illinois following a safe blowing at Iola Illinois. Posses aided by bloodhounds pursued the robbers. The Xenia suspect resisted arrest and was shot and dangerously wounded.
Hundreds of fellow townsmen attended the funeral of Hon. W. I. Chamberlain editor of the Wyoming Journal for nearly thirty years and former mayor. He was a practicing lawyer and a Democrat prominent in party councils.
Des Moines Dec 14 The Iowa Coal Operators association met at the Savery hotel to discuss merging with the Commercial Coal Operators association and to push a freight rate revision to expand markets. Officers include N L Waterman Ottumwa president and E C Smith Des Moines treasurer. The joint conference with the miners' scale committee next spring will select representatives and likely address wage questions.
The Markets section reports estimated hog receipts 26000 with leftovers from yesterday. Prices ranged 6 higher than yesterday, light hogs 8.06 to 8.50, mixed packers 8.25 to 8.6125, heavy shipping 8.30 to 8.70, rough 8.30 to 8.40. Cattle at 110.0 weak and down. sheep 21000, weak.
Estimated hog receipts today about 26000 with official receipts yesterday 46294 and shipments 3135. Market steady at yesterday's best time with varied price ranges for bulk light mixed and heavy hogs. Cows, heifers, stockers and western cattle show mixed declines and sensitivities with feeder and lamb figures noted.
Chicago closing market notes receipts 33 000 with slow demand. Bulk prices 8 40 to 8 50 for light, mixed packers 8 20 to 8 55, heavy ship's grades 8 25 to 8 60. Cattle slow and weak, sheep weak.
