A local sale advertises handkerchiefs at 2c and 3c with 40 dozen options up to 20c each. 10c and 12c items include embroidered and linen initial handkerchiefs, often selling for 30c elsewhere. 20c and 25c sets are billed as the greatest and best, with new styles and claims of quality far above 50c retail.
Citizens gathered at the Graham theater yesterday afternoon for a talk by Rev. U B Smith of the Children’s Home Society. Col Bell opened, Rev Thorn offered prayer, and Rev A B Smith spoke on aiding the society which has helped over 7 900 children including 1 200 in Iowa. Six county children were aided last year. A $72 85 subscription was raised.
Michael Condon died at his home in West Washington from Brights disease. He was about sixty eight, born in Ireland and had lived in Iowa forty years. Funeral services by Father Jacobsmeier were held at St James church this morning at nine with interment in the old Catholic cemetery northwest of the city.
A Brighton woman, Margaret M. Scott, about 48, was brought before the Commissioners of Insanity after years of caregiving for a paralyzed father. She is reported to have a delusion she poisoned him and was adjudged insane. Mrs. J W Teeter escorted her to the Insane Asylum at Mt Pleasant for treatment.
The Glasgow Rifles staged an oyster supper for the Washington team on Saturday evening with Harvey and Wartel to prepare the feast. Contestants posted unprecedented scores as every shot counted as five points. Afterward several players showed fatigue resembling a wall built to four by six feet. if it toppled it would still be taller than before. A second match is scheduled today at one o'clock on the same range.
Saturday night between nine and ten o clock thieves entered the barn of M Yard near Crawfordsville and carried off a good buggy and a set of single breast harness. They tried to enter the homes of Mr McCall and Mr Robertson. Robertson fired two shots. Sheriff Teeter hopes to have them in custody soon.
Readers learn that Hall's Catarrh Cure is a claimed permanent remedy for catarrh, a constitutional disease. It is taken internally to affect blood and mucous surfaces, with a $100 reward offered for any uncured case, and a recommendation to consult Treated by Druggists at 75 cents.
Two measles cases were reported yesterday by Dr. Boice at the residence of Thos. Collatts in south Washington. The City Board of Health quarantined the family today and authorities vow to enforce the law to prevent further spread of the disease.
The several young peoples societies in town received an invitation to attend a union service at the Methodist church next Sunday evening. The note praises cooperative effort among youths and their work in harmony for good causes.
New Ninety-Six School nears completion and the community is urged to plan a public program to inaugurate the building. Citizens are asked to show public spirit by supporting an inaugural event in the fine new walls before any wear or ink spills occur.
During yesterday morning services eleven new members were received at the Methodist church with the ordinance of baptism administered. Rev Thorn preached on The Power of Influence. Since meetings began there have been eighteen additions to the church with ten baptisms at the morning service.
At the union services of the First and Second U P Churches yesterday Rev. A B Smith a Methodist clergyman preached the discourse. He is an experienced man and gives profitable sermons.
Mrs Alma Glasgow White resigns due to failing health after two years in the city schools. The Board regrets losing her services and Miss Kendall has been secured to fill the position.
Rev A B Smith preached last evening after delivering an address at the opera house in the afternoon. Local gatherings at the M E Church resume throughout the week led by the visiting speaker.
Gold plated bowls marketed as presents feature the Methodist, Presbyterian and Second U P Church groups along with the Court House and Academy in Washington Iowa. A compact list hints at a sale or display of religious and civic institutions for gifts.

The Rock Island will start a new passenger train Monday the 2st. It departs Muscatine at 450 p m matching the Firefly’s arrival. The route runs Muscatine to Davenport, Davenport to Wilton, and Wilton back to Muscatine.
The Pearl Handles and a single passenger train led the first crossing of the new double track Mississippi bridge at Davenport meeting another train on the bridge. The west bound passenger train passed Iowa Division freight on the line, marking a historic opening. Residents note visits and home events around Brighton and Columbus Jrs as the week begins.
