Donald Spivey of South English and Flora Greiner of Washington obtained a marriage license at the courthouse this morning.
At 1 15 this morning the Washington fire department responded to a car fire near East End grocery on East Washington street. The blaze was put out quickly with little damage and firemen were not needed beyond the initial response.
Washington December 13 The big obstacle to a final emergency foreign aid bill is China with conferees aiming for a nightfall compromise. The House favored 60 million for China while the Senate asked for no special sum, as talks center on how the China issue affects the total 597 million request from President Truman and the 590 million House allotment.
Spirit Lake Iowa December 15 Dickinson County Farm Bureau rejects criticism of state Rep David G Ainsworth resigning saying 100 percent income tax is fairest and would relieve real estate tax. The group cautions against higher property tax for schools and highways and notes only 10 percent of taxpayers would benefit from lowering the tax rate. Ainsworth resignations followed amid GOP debate and upcoming special legislature session.
Three gunmen kill informer John Kuesis and two witnesses in a garage. They wound two more, and police arrest Lowell Fentress while Thomas Daley is killed. James Morrelli remains missing as Chicago faces its worst mass killing since 1929.
The Leon Beatty post of the American Legion and the Legion Auxiliary will hold a joint meeting at the Legion rooms next Tuesday evening. A dinner will be served at six o'clock, with unmarried men invited to attend without bringing provisions. After the meal the Auxiliary will hold an important meeting, followed by a special form of entertainment not yet disclosed.
The Camp Fire girls hold a short Christmas service at eight oclock Tuesday evening at the public library. The public is invited to attend and mothers of Camp Fire girls have a special invitation. This Christmas service has been conducted by Camp Fire girls for many years.

The Justice Department filed an antitrust suit in U S district court charging DuPont de Nemours with unlawfully monopolizing the U S cellophane market. The action alleges cartel agreements with six foreign firms, using patents to fix prices, and seeks to require DuPont to sell plants at reasonable prices to open the market.
Washington Community Chest plans to hold the over subscribed amount in reserve to reduce the 1949 budget. The Rural Youth of Washington county sponsored by the Farm Bureau will host a dance at the Legion rooms in city hall on December 18 from 8 30 p.m. to midnight. Miller's band of Keota will perform with refreshments available. Admission is 1.50 per couple as the junior Farm Bureau group notes a county membership of 55 with more expected to join.
The YWCA annual Christmas party for children will be held at 1:00 PM Saturday in the lobby. The YWCA board leads arrangements with a committee planning the program and gifts. Attending school children will receive individual gifts and Christmas treats.

Astronomers nationwide awaited clear skies to view a comet hailed by southern hemisphere observers as the era’s greatest show since Halley in 1910. Cloudy conditions hindered northern hemisphere attempts as reports reached Harvard Observatory. the comet stood about 60 million miles away with a tail estimated between 10 and 40 million miles.

Rayburn described Young Life’s aim to reach indifferent teens with practical Christianity, likening its approach to Paul’s Athens sermon.
Muscatine county authorities raided five taverns last night on warrants by Justice R. C. Peterson. Sheriff Fred Nesper led the operations and confiscated 125 cases of illegal beer, a small amount of whiskey, and various gambling devices based on information filed by the county.
