A New York upper west side tenement fire and collapse left 21 known dead with the toll likely to reach 36. More than 40 people were injured as the eight story building was razed after a fire swept ice-house connected wall fell. Police hold two arson suspects who boasted of starting the blaze.
Funeral services for Matilda W. TeBockhorst 53 were held at Holy Trinity church Richmond with Rev W F Boeckmann presiding. Burial followed in Holy Trinity cemetery. She died Monday after a heart attack after declining health. She was born March 7 1893 and resided in the Richmond area. Casket bearers were Claude Gles Escher Urban Aelred Norbert and Robert TeBockhorst. She is survived by brothers Frank West Bend Henry Washington William Joseph Leo Harold and sister Mrs Joseph Esche of Richmond.
Some 260 chauffeurs mostly truck operators renewed their licenses for 1947 at the county courthouse by paying a two dollar renewal fee. State Highway Patrolman Earl Cummings said this was the largest single-day renewal in seven counties. Drivers have two more Thursdays to renew before year end, December 19 and 26, when Cummings will return to Washington.
Melvin Wildt age 12 who fled the Soldiers and Sailors Orphans Home at Davenport was sheltered at an Ainsworth home before being picked up and brought back to Davenport. He appeared at the Ainsworth home again yesterday and was to be returned to the Davenport institution today.
Des Moines report tallies 1946 Iowa highway fatalities at 487 through November, up from 320 1945. Headline totals show Polk 25 deaths top county list, Cerro Gordo rising sharply, with 257 nocturnal and 217 daytime deaths split.
A mob estimated at 3000, described as Azerbaijani or sympathizers, stormed the left wing Tudeh club in Tehran injuring at least 20 party members. Police watched as rioters chased Tudeh members through the streets shouting revenge while government troops reportedly neared Tabriz.
The House postwar economic policy committee, 11 Democrats and seven Republicans, urged labor and management to boost production, saying high output can restore buying power. It warned against total government control, blamed Congress for surplus disposal issues, and urged quicker surplus property disposal and limited emergency powers ending by March 31 with new targeted legislation.
William Dean Graf, 17, of West Chester Iowa, enlisted for three years in the army air forces. Cpl Charles L Anson announced the Davenport recruiting station entry. Graf has been sent to Fort Riley for assignment after medical and swearing in at the Omaha recruiting HQ. Parents: Mr. and Mrs Henry J Graf.
Gwen Ramseyer daughter of Mr and Mrs Harry Ramseyer recently appeared in a State University of Iowa music department recital in Iowa City. A sophomore in liberal arts she is a member of the university concert and chorus and sang Lusciatemi Morire by Monteverdi.
The forecasted cold spell continued with a low of 18 degrees and a high of 45 yesterday. Light snow covered the ground and icy sidewalks formed from the prior storm. The month’s low remains eight degrees above zero for the season.
Attorney C C Wilson, a plaintiff in a Washington county district court case, spent all of yesterday on the witness stand and was still being examined in the morning. His testimony covered the operation of the Wilson estate farm southeast of Washington, crops, soil conditions, and damage from the Rock Island Ainsworth Brighton cut off construction. The plaintiffs seek damages beyond appraised values in condemnation. The trial will continue for several days and is the term’s sole jury trial.
In about two weeks since automobile license sales opened at the county treasurer's office, 1126 cars 244 trucks and 137 farm trailers have been licensed. A steady stream of customers filled the counter as plates become available and many licensees without plates have begun to secure them. The office will mail plates to owners not calling in. Next week an additional assistant will join the staff. Deputy Helen Carson resigned effective year end and will be replaced by Jean Mangold with Prances Sojka filling Miss Mangold's prior duties temporarily before year end.
The Blue Cross enrollment closes Monday December 16 at five o clock and will not reopen for at least nine. Families should contact their township health chairman or the Farm Bureau office by that date. Maurine Bodham will be in the Farm Bureau office Saturday evening to assist enrollment or payment for the next six. Families already enrolled must pay by December 16 or be dropped from the group.
Children eligible for the Y W C A annual Christmas party may secure tickets next week at the Y rooms from 3 to 5 o clock on Wednesday Thursday and Friday afternoons December 18 19 and 26. The party will be held at 3 o'clock Monday afternoon December 23 in the YW lobby with Mrs Charles Wilson as secretary at the desk.
Over 100 bankers from Washington and Louisa counties met at the Y with a dinner and business session. Orrin Johnson of Crawfordsville bank presided. Fred Lindenmeyer was elected president and Fred Skola vice president. Meetings occur quarterly with the next session planned for April in Louisa county. Speakers on soil conservation included Floyd Vetter Edward Oakes and Joe Knotek. High school boys quartet provided entertainment.
With Christmas near the Goodfellows launch their annual appeal to fund Christmas baskets for needy families. The Y M C A s Men s club and the Evening Journal sponsor the drive led by Chairman Robert Day with assistance from Robert Arthur Dan Brindley Karl Lowett es Merle Simpson and Logan Heilman. Jars will be placed in local stores for cash gifts and contributions may be left at the Journal office or mailed to the Goodfellows care of the Journal. A coupon appears on this page and will run through Christmas.
Charles W. Johnson of Winterset Iowa employed on road work on highway 81 south of Wellman was arrested in Wellman by Deputy Walt Kiesey on forgery charges. He allegedly signed a fictitious name to a $35 check used to buy an automobile light at Gamble store in Washington. Johnson was arraigned before Justice J. E. Boyee and held to the grand jury, with a district court appearance expected. authorities say he admitted the charge.
Merle Ward Sherman and Rosa Genevieve Baker of Wallingford obtained a marriage license at the courthouse yesterday. The couple plan to wed soon.
Mr and Mrs Elliot Roosevelt arrived in Warsaw for a brief visit from Moscow and stayed at the Villanoy place where Fiorello H LaGuardia and Marshal Tito were lodged.

Anna Witthoft died at her home 214 East Washington after a brief illness. Born June 24, 1857 in Harnstedt Germany she came to America at 14. She married Christoph Witthoft March 7, 1878. Survived by two sons four daughters twenty one grandchildren thirteen great grandchildren and several great grand children. Funeral Sunday 2:30 at Sherman's funeral home with Rev Milo Phillips officiating. Burial Jim Grove cemetery.

The Duke and Duchess of Windsor were due to visit President Truman today after arriving from New York. They are staying at the British embassy and are expected to be in Washington through Sunday.
A speeding Pennsylvania Golden Triangle Limited passenger train plowed into wreckage of two freights near Coulter Ohio killing at least seven soldiers and trainmen and injuring around forty with many still trapped. The two freights crashed minutes earlier causing chaos as rescuers worked to extract the injured.
Mrs Annie Johns widow of David Johns died this afternoon at her Crawfordsville home. The body was taken to J A Jones funeral home where funeral arrangements had not yet been announced.
