President Eugene A. Gilmore announced the Iowa board of education approved a six year contract extension for coach Eddie Anderson at the University of Iowa, following a recommendation from the athletics board.
Ed Radke suffered a severe hand wound when a cartridge under a sighted match exploded. He noted the bullet failed to pop out as in prior attempts. Radke had earlier been injured months ago in a gasoline tank welding incident involving fumes.
Harvey Johns, 43, of Bussey was killed when slate fell at the Arcol mine near Marysville. He reported for work about 7 a.m. and was found pinned under the fallen slate near the entrance by fellow miners who came to the mine after reporting for work. Ernest Courtney operates the mine.
The Dubuque Truck Drivers Local 421 picketed Rosheks Brothers department store over alleged union contract violations. Officials say the firm shifted truck ownership to drivers to dodge contract terms, a move they claim breaches the Wagner Act and have filed with the National Labor Relations Board.
A 17 percent rise in private sector job placements in Iowa occurred from October 1 to December 9, with 12,628 Iowans placed, compared with 10,828 in the same period in 1938, according to the Iowa unemployment compensation commission.

Board members say the enlargement of the served area leaves no space for enrollment of relief families living in the boxcar colony set up years ago by Black Hawk County roads.
The new armory dedication proceeds Thursday evening despite cold weather tests show the heating plant meets requirements. Fred Downing notes ticket sales at the door begin about an hour before the eight o clock program led by Governor Wilson with a regional band, vaudeville acts, and army demonstrations. Proceeds fund armory equipment.

William German of Washing ton and Mrs. Cardona Greiner of Iowa City were hospitalized with non serious injuries after a collision east of Ainsworth last night. Orson Cox of Iowa City drove the other car. Mrs Greiner and passenger Raymond Nelson were treated for facial cuts. The German car rolled down an embankment and upended onto a fence. Cox sustained chest bruises and several passengers escaped with minor hurts.
Allamakee county records 1939 debut fatality as an eight year old farm boy en route to school is struck and killed by a motorcyclist in WAUKON. The incident marks the county's first traffic death of the year.
The air patrol began a vigorous anti mine campaign by raiding German seaplane bases as announced by the air ministry. In London the first secret session of Parliament in 22 years opened to debate opposition criticism of military supply organization. The Iowa Supreme Court was asked to reconsider its decision that Walter Rhodes of Iowa City must be hanged for murdering his wife Mabel by placing a dynamite cap in a shotgun and getting her to pull the trigger. The Washington county medical society elected officers for 1940 at its annual meeting held after a turkey dinner. Dr J M Lloyd was named president, Dr T M Mast vice president, and Dr W B Kyle secretary treasurer. Most doctors attended. three were absent due to illness.
Toledo coach Harry Rice urged higher effort and attitude in football and life at a Y’s Men’s Club gathering. He praised Devilless High and noted players reaching Michigan and Ohio State first teams, while praising the Iowa Hawkeyes. He blamed teachers and administration for public indifference and urged schools to give students valuable takeaways.
Miss Minnie K Wolfe 64 died at 12 45 AM at 704 West Second Street after a month sickness from pneumonia with complications. Funeral tentatively set for Friday 9 AM at St James Catholic Church. Rosary Thursday 8 PM at Wolfe home. Survived by mother 81, brothers Louis Corvallis Montana Leo Bernard, Vera Washington Ruth Davenport. sister Mrs Mike Dean deceased.
William F. Latta born in Washington county January 6, 1873 died in Muscatine December 7. He was a son of Frank and Sarah Cowles Latta and was never married. Surviving are one brother K. C. Latta of Pa ton Town, two sisters Mves Rose Von Dresky of Muscatine and Mrs. Kathryn Overholt of Columbus Junction.
Chairman Wayne Norman of the county agricultural conservation committee was informed that February 29 will be the closing date for accepting 1940 crop insurance applications on spring wheat. The notice came from state chairman J. K. Kline.
In the meeting, the Goodfellows project and the Christmas Dance were discussed. Afterward most members remained to address invitations to the Christmas ball.
A sub committee of the League of Nations Finnish appeal committee drafted recommendations to the assembly calling for expulsion of Russia from the league and urging aid for Finland from non member nations including the United States. The recommendations condemned Russian aggression and urged non recognition of the puppet government in Finland and enforcement of the expulsion clause.
Finland fronts mount a determined resistance as reinforcements move to the east central front. Withdrawal on the central front aims to lure enemy units into position for Finnish counterattacks. Copenhagen dispatches report successful Finnish counterattacks in the Salla sector. The Karelian Isthmus line remains confident despite new Russian reinforcements.

Funeral services for George Schneider were held yesterday afternoon at L. A. Jones Funeral Home, conducted by Dr. F W Eastwood. Burial followed in Elm Grove Cemetery with pallbearers Oscar Jugenheimer I Rothschild Cloyce Horsey Tom Rickey Mike Lee and Clarence Brinning.
