In San Diego Mrs. Mary E. Erwin posted a letter with three one dollar stamps for a three-cent local mail. She says a postal clerk sold her 15 of the new one dollar stamps for fifteen cents, creating a puzzling overpay situation.
Reports from Vienna describe renewed clashes in Budapest and the Hungarian countryside as Soviet forces push to end nationwide strikes against the puppet government of Janos Kadár. Soviet and Red militia conduct operations while partisans resist under martial law with heavy military tribunals looming.
Three explosions sparked a flash fire at the Metropolitan variety store in Keokuk Iowa. Firemen confined flames to a one and a half story brick building and nearby shops suffered smoke damage. No injuries reported and stock was destroyed.
Mrs. C. O. Stufflebeam said a man asked for service at the Walnut Street Market, pretended a gun, took $40 from a cash register, then grabbed a loaf of bread and fled. The incident occurred Tuesday in Des Moines.
Washington County residents join a district farm economic forum in Mt. Pleasant sponsored by Iowa State College extension service. Speakers include Carl Malone, Dr. Karl Fox, Dr. John Timmins, and Dr. Wallace Ogg. Attendees listed include Richard Stephens Corbin Crawford Herbert Campbell Ainsworth Leonard Tindal Don Sheetz Lawrence Miksch Marion Augustine George Horn Washington George Dare Tom Huston Crawfordsville Robert Stephens West Chester and C. United Nations in New York reports Japan moves toward UN membership with a Security Council recommendation likely unanimous despite Soviet veto history. Russia pledged not to block in Moscow pact, making General Assembly approval a formality unless new issues disrupt. Western and Indian led drafts clash over language on condemning the Soviet Union.
Frieda Pauline Frech 28 and Harold E Pewick 31 were married by long distance telephone with Frech in Des Moines and Pewick in Tokyo. Two clergymen and Frech's mother assisted the proxy ceremony conducted by Grace Methodist Church clergy. The wedding lets Frech join Pewick in Japan where he serves in the armed forces.
Retail stores in Washington will stay open until 9 p m tonight and will not close for supper. Santa Claus will greet youngsters in the business district. Additional evening hours are planned December 19 20 21 and Saturday nights December 15 and 22.
Mrs. Golia Miller of the American Legion Auxiliary relays an urgent request from the Save the Children Federation in Knoxville Tennessee for heavy clothing children’s clothing and shoes for Hungarian refugees. The deadline is December 17 with local donations due at Don Hazen’s Barber Shop before that date.
Washington High School vocal music students present their first concert of the year under director Robert B. Ferrell. The program features the mixed chorus girls glee club and two ensembles with soloist Carolyn Crawford performing Jesu Bambino. Tickets at door. concert starts 7 30 p m with a reception for student parents afterward.
Irish nationalists attacked army police and government facilities in Northern Ireland in a coordinated gun blitz. Police foiled a main assault on Armagh regimental HQ while raiders seized 200 pounds of dynamite and destroyed a radio transmitter and bridges amid gale conditions.
Washington County 4-H members will weigh and tattoo baby beef club projects on December 27 28 and 29 under county extension director Tom Robb. Weighing and tattooing occur at stations across the county with the schedule to be announced later. Members must purchase animals before weighing and ensure each animal weighs no more than 650 pounds.
West German Foreign Minister Brentano warned NATO that Russia has massed 22 divisions in East Germany with 30 to 40 more in satellite states. The leaders debated response if an anti Communist revolt breaks out in East Germany. Dulles and Lloyd offered differing views on Soviet strength and Hungarians’ impact.
Russia charged the United States with intervention in the domestic affairs of Hungary and other eastern bloc states as the General Assembly neared voting on a resolution demanding Soviet troops exit Hungary. Kuznetsov opened the item titled Intervention by the United States in the domestic affairs of the people’s democracies and subversive activities against those states. The assembly also considered a resolution urging Hammarskjold to Moscow to seek a Hungarian settlement, and Austria proposed Hammarskjold negotiate with UN members before Christmas recess. In the Security Council, Japan moved toward becoming a UN member.
Secretary Ezra Benson warned of serious problems in administering the 1957 acreage program after farmers in 24 corn states voted down base acreage for the 1957 crop while approving the traditional allotment plan. Preliminary returns showed 257,874 favor base acreages to 163,227 for allotments.
Forecasters predict 4 to 6 inches of snow across most of Iowa with 4 inches in central areas and 4 to 6 inches in the southeast and extreme south by early Thursday. Subzero lows are expected tonight in the north with highs today ranging from 31 to 42 across several cities.
The Agriculture Department announced higher soil bank payments for the coming year. Per acre rates for not planting basic crops rise: corn 42.66 dollars (up from 33), wheat 20.04 (from 8), cotton 54.15 (from 24), rice 68.18 (from 50).
A Florida jury directed to acquit seven white defendants after the state failed to prove a confession and sufficient evidence in the case of Jesse Woods accused of insulting a white teacher. Woods reported seven men beat him during removal from a Wildwood jail on October 27.
A Vancouver report states a boy saw possible wreckage in Sumas Mountain area of British Columbia, with 62 aboard. Royal Canadian Air Force to deploy helicopter to confirm in view of earlier disappearance near Chilliwack. Three adults using field glasses corroborated tail piece sighting.

The Washington Council of Churches organizes a used clothing drive from December 12 to 17. Clothes in any condition will be distributed through Church World Service Centers, with drop-off at local churches or the county extension office and pickup service for those unable to deliver.
Carrol Shanks of Prudential urged special consideration for farmers due to lack of control over weather and markets. He addressed about 6,000 delegates at the American Farm Bureau Federation convention. Senator John F Kennedy noted farm vote fallacies and called for a balanced farm program amid diverse voter views.
Grinnell College student Edmund Morrison of Washington Iowa will serve as business manager for two trial issues of the Scarlet and Black. The tentative staff will be reviewed by the Committee on Student Publications before permanent appointment. Morrison is a junior and a 1954 Washington High School graduate.
Washington County voters backed the soil bank corn acreage program by 462 to 77 in a county-wide tally. The measure won nationally with about 62 percent, with 741 ballots cast and two challenged, as reported by ASC office manager Howard Witting.
George Krogmeier of Fort Madison dies Wednesday after noon after a heart condition and stroke. He lived in Fort Madison and farmed. he was father of Dr. George Krogmeier of Washington. Survived by wife, three sons and three daughters. Funeral at Sacred Heart Church Fort Madison Friday at 9 a.m.
In Pilot Mound Iowa Fred Wolford 82 and his sister Minnie 80 were found dead in their home from carbon monoxide poisoning authorities say the space heater burned oxygen and soot clogged the chimney a thermometer showed over 130 degrees a wallet with 1780 and a purse were found on Wolford and Miss Wolford respectively Friends visiting Tuesday found the pair both fully clothed Wolford last seen Monday afternoon in Ogden was called to Ogden by three friends who stopped by the house to pick up Miss Wolford
Washington residents may join an adult mixed swimming class at the YMCA with Don Kiesey as instructor. Enrollment is by phone before the first session on Monday December 17. Members pay 3.50 while non members pay 4. A father and son swim session runs Thursdays 5 15 to 6 p.m. with a 0.35 and 0.25 fee for non members.
Weather bulletin warns heavy snow diminishing to flurries tonight with a five day outlook of continued cold and a gradual warming weekend. Snow totals exceed four inches statewide with higher accumulations in the southeast and extreme south. Temperatures range from highs 15 to 25 degrees and lows near zero to 16 below in the north and south regions, with precipitation around one tenth inch north to three tenths south.
