Detroit 82 year old Owen McCarthy told a judge he was hard of hearing during arraignment for a drunk charge. A police officer whispered a beer offer from behind him and McCarthy indicated interest. He received a suspended sentence.
Vocal program at the W H S Auditorium features mixed chorus and girls glee club with soloists and ensembles. Selections include O Come All Ye Faithful O Rejoice Ye Christians Loudly How Far Is It To Bethlehem Jesu Bambino and A Christmas lullaby with Handel Brahms Praetorius and Warlock pieces performed by Enid McConnell Charlotte Berry Wanda Blattner Roberta Wiley and others.
Jagged Silvertip Mountain near Hope British Columbia is the focus as Royal Canadian Air Force search planes probe for the Trans-Canada Airlines craft carrying 62 aboard. Radar contact was lost near Silvertip and a lodge at Allison Pass reported an explosion.
Hundreds of Polish students clashed with police and troops in Stettin during anti-Soviet demonstrations. They smashed the Soviet consulate, overturned streetcars, and were dispersed only after army troops were sent in. The event escalated from hooliganism to a mass demonstration with serious clashes.

A three story brick downtown building suffered severe fire damage Monday night. Estimates put the loss around 300000 dollars as the structure, formerly home to the OB West Fruit Co, was under remodeling for Plumb Supply Co.
Lloyd G. Robertson, district court clerk in Washington County, resigns effective December 3 after being re elected for a second term. He will join Washington Concrete Company. The Board of Supervisors will select a successor who will serve until the 1958 general election.
Washington County Red Cross chairman Walter Farrell urges Washington County residents to donate to a relief fund for thousands of Hungarian refugees. He warns early response has been disappointing and asks donations at any local bank or mailed to the county Red Cross office in Washington.
Secretary of State John Foster Dulles told the 15 nation NATO council that force is not the answer to world problems and affirmed U N settlements. He urged moral force with strong military readiness and hinted the U S will pour more funds into Europe to support NATO commitments. He warned Soviet pressures risk dangerous moves while supporting optimism about Communist decay.
Hundreds of Russian tanks ring Budapest as Hungary hallmarks the most complete strike to date. Refugees report halted movement in and out of the capital, with factories idle and rail and postal services paralyzed while gas and electricity largely continue.

Funeral services for Larry Colton 73 will be held at 1:30 pm Wednesday December 12 at Stacy Funeral Home Columbus Junction. Rev Dale Brehmer United Presbyterian Church Ainsworth will preside. Burial will be in Columbus City Cemetery. Colton died Monday at Mercy Hospital Iowa City.

Iowa Supreme Court orders new trials for two damage suits filed by Robert C. Hall’s parents after a traffic sign fell on the 4 year old in Keota killing him. The court held that maintenance and repair of streets and sidewalks is a proper government function.
Dr Charles Beckman of Kalona was named president of the Washington County Medical Society at a Monday meeting. Other 1957 officers include Dr C A Boice as vice president, Dr W S Kyle as secretary, and Dr D G Sattler of Kalona as Iowa State Medical Society delegate. Dr Boice was named president of the Washington County Hospital medical staff at another Monday meeting, with Dr M L McCreedy as vice president and Dr W S Kyle as secretary.
A Somerville soldier admitted setting three church fires and was held on arson charges. Robert Whelan 18 said he started the St John the Evangelist Cathedral blaze in anger over opened poor boxes to steal for food. He also confessed to fires at St Josephs Boston and Beacons Hill Evan g elist Church, with investigators questioning him about Greek Orthodox Church damage.
Arthur J. Cory, 57, confessed to fatally shooting his wife Dorothy 39 and daughter Letitia, and said he would ask to be sent to the electric chair. Sheriff Ed Reeves linked the killings to fear of losing his job as he waited in jail after Monday’s arrest. Cory slashed his wrist but survived. he told reporters he intended to swap a defense for execution.
Funeral services for Alexander McCreedy will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Jones Funeral Home with Rev. C E Mc Pherson in charge. Burial will follow in Ainsworth Cemetery. He died Monday at his home northeast of Ainsworth.
Washington officials discuss an expanded aid program favoring Western European allies. The plan envisions benign trade policies to help Britain France the Netherlands and Italy with currency stabilization and economies while urging buy American. Concessions to allied airlines and coordinated needs may be weighed against US standards and colonial policies as Secretary Dulles weighs options for Eisenhower.
The Central Area school reorganization steering committee met in Haskins Monday night to explain details of the proposal affecting Washington County residents. Howard Benn noted a good turnout and said the next meeting would be Friday night at Fairview school. Residents of Living Lake Jackson Center Fairview and Grand Prairie districts and other interested persons are invited.
Iowa will receive 3,000 to 5,000 Rose Bowl tickets from Oregon State to meet demand. Francis Graham, Iowa athletic business manager, said arrival timing is unclear and tickets will be distributed like the 12,000 sold to the public on December 3. About 60,000 applications were filed for the 12,000 tickets. Iowa initially got 17,000 but 3,000 went to other Big Ten schools. Oregon State sends 40,000 tickets under the Big Ten Pacific Coast agreement. Iowa’s extra tickets may be mailed out Wednesday or Thursday.
Miss Eunice Kyle's trailer home on the Leslie Byler farm eight miles north of Kalona burned at 6 30 pm Monday. A back draft from an oil heater caused fuel to ignite. Kalona Fire Department arrived to find the structure completely destroyed. Miss Kyle works at an Iowa City hospital.
Floyd E Love died Monday at Washington County Hospital after nine months as a patient. Born August 16 1888 in Ainsworth he lived in Cedar Rapids Waterloo and Washington. He served in the 31st Railroad Engineers in France and retired May 1 1953 after a fifty year railroad career. Funeral set at Turner Chapel Cedar Rapids.
Washington County Legionnaires will meet in Riverside on Thursday December 13 at 8 p.m. County posts are urged to attend with the Riverside post hosting this event led by county commander S W Easter.
Mrs. Grant Grimm of Riverside formerly Jan ice Scherrer is credited as the first woman to bag a deer in Washington County during the two day season opening at 8 a.m. She shot a 210 pound doe at 8 10 a.m. on land southeast of Riverside near the Iowa river, with six male hunters present and her grandfather Mr. Prehoda as landowner. Two other deer were reported that morning by others in the party.
United Press Iowa reports a cold wave with gusty northerly winds. Lows drop to 5 below in the north and 5 to 10 above in the south. Wed brings partly cloudy skies with highs 18 to 28. Thursday remains chilly with light snow possible.
