W. Carlson, in his first term as Clayton County sheriff, has accepted an invitation from the federal Bureau of Investigation in Washington to enter its three month National Police Academy starting January 6.
Paul Medders, 34, of Omaha Nebraska, pleaded guilty to larceny for stealing eight cases of dynamite from the county farm storehouse around November 20. District Judge Homer A. Fuller sentenced him to five years at Fort Madison penitentiary.
The Bundles for Ari movement in Des Moines gathers World War II steel helmets to send to Great Britain. The helmets are intended for air raid wardens and civilians in exposed areas to protect against shell fragments from anti aircraft fire.
A blaze in a patient clothes closet at Cherokee State Hospital for the Insane caused slight damage to the main building. About 4 percent of patients were moved to another ward as firefighters contained the fire within half an hour. Superintendent Dr. Charles F. Obermann could not immediately estimate total damage, which was mostly smoke related.
Eight Iowa boys, former tuberculosis patients, are at a national youth administration center near Colorado Springs to recover. They perform light work building rooms for girls’ NYA projects, make furniture, and assist public agencies while earning ten dollars monthly and receiving room and board.
Secretary Morgenthau said he would never authorize private loans to any debt defaulting nation as forbidden by the Johnson Act. He noted no request has been made and cited his talks with Sir Frederick Phillips of the British treasury.
The Y's Men's Club and the Journal sponsor a yearly Goodfellow's Program to aid needy families this Christmas. Attach a check or cash to the coupon and mail or drop at the Journal office. food donations are welcome and to be left at the Y.M.C.C.A. by December 21. Call 23 to arrange food pickup or to leave addresses of needy families.
The community of Brighton reports the disappearance of A. B. Clark, a leading merchant, who left in a new Buick for a vacation on September date. No destination is known and family has received no word since. Police and relatives fear possible amnesia and hope publicity aids locate him. Clark ran a flourishing business with no apparent reason for the sudden departure.
Iowa reports eight percent higher proceeds in twelve days of the 1940 Christmas seal sale across 32 cities and 42 communities totaling 19 159.47 dollars. Iowa City leads with 55 percent gain, Red Oak 70 percent, and several towns including Ackley Ames Des Moines Mt Pleasant Grinnell Muscatine show ten percent or more. Washington notes slower start with seals unpaid. Washington County groups endorse the sale as part of a national health push.
A half grown white and yellow cat named Mickey, friendly and well mannered, went missing from Washington county Court House area after briefly staying at the building. Janitor Will Sickles asks owners to contact if they have seen him, noting the cat’s previous injury and recent healthier, livelier appearance.
The Marquis of Lothian, British ambassador to the United States, died in Washington after a brief illness at age 58. He helped negotiate U.S. aid to Britain and led British purchases of American planes and munitions. Secretary Hull said the U.S. might offer a cruiser to transport his body to England.
Washington reports light snow today with a prospect of more as cold weather nears. In Des Moines a second severe cold wave moves in with heavy statewide snowfall and temperatures expected to plunge as low as 15 degrees below zero in parts of Iowa.
Four mice and his activity along that line may have scared others away. Will Sickles asks anyone who has seen Mickey to contact him to bring the rodent back, hoping he can be spared from his new home or returned to Will Bickles.
Rev. C. W. Troxel, pioneer China missionary, will address the Pilotburg church west of Washington next Sunday at 7 30 pm. He arrives from Chicago Saturday and stays with Rev. De Koning’s family until Wednesday morning. Troxel has labored in China since 1901 and will discuss China and Japan at four union Sunday schools plus additional gatherings.
George Linaberry a 47 year old Davenport resident died from injuries after a car in which he rode overturned north of Burlington on December 4. His sister in law Mrs Milton Linaberry was fined ten dollars for driving without a license. Mrs Milburn McKay and Mrs Riley Diener of Elkhart Indiana returned home after a week with Mr and Mrs Frank Anderson.
The text notes that he knows Chinese customs and language thoroughly and has earned medals from the provincial governor and the President of China for famine relief. An outstanding speaker, he has preached in numerous churches and meetings across the United States during furloughs. He and Mrs. Troxel just finished their fifth China term, enduring war, confusion, distress and danger.
Mrs. Joe Maxwell aged 67 died at 8 25 PM at her home 432 East Madison after three years of ill health and long bedrest. Funeral at 2 PM Friday at Sherman funeral home with Dr F W Eastwood and Dr R C Keagy officiating. Burial Elm Grove cemetery. flowers and visitation details listed.
British mechanized planes and warships pushed Italian forces westward across the Egyptian desert toward Libya. More than 20000 Italian troops have reportedly been captured or destroyed, threatening the Suez canal. Churchill hailed the Sidi Barrani recapture and coastal advances as a first order victory in Africa. Greek and German fronts show continued fighting while air raids strike enemy targets. Italy had not admitted loss of Sid Barrani.
Washington December report shows airplane output held to about 1000 planes monthly due to supply bottlenecks and subcontractor part shortages. Republic Aircraft of Farmingdale laid off 50 workers, with more cuts likely amid $80 million in military orders. Experts blame government contract coordination and note unused capacity could aid production. War Department had projected higher annual rates earlier.
Mrs. Maxwell of Havre and Ainsworth communities moved to Washington in 1922 after twenty eight years on the farm. A member of the Women’s Relief Corps Methodist church Yang I and EOW clubs her life centered on home and friends. Survived by husband Lloyd Maxwell Washington a son four grandchildren three great grandchildren and several siblings.
