Boone Howard L Springer and Carl A Grossman war veterans appeal the Boone county board order appointing John Oler courthouse custodian. They allege the soldiers' preference law was not observed.
A boy arrived three miles west of Coralville while an ambulance carried his mother Mrs Julius Hadenfeldt to University hospital Iowa City. Both mother and child are reported doing nicely.
Ottumwa man Robert Millhouse, long pursued for burglary, was captured in Pattonsburg, Missouri after attending his wife’s funeral in Ottumwa. Millhouse escaped from Sigourney jail while awaiting sentencing. Police alerted Missouri authorities when the service drew attention.
Clinton and Davenport Sons of Union Veterans members organized the first Last Man's Club in Clinton. Joseph Melvin of Clinton was elected the first colonel as originator of the idea. The club pledges to carry on Grand Army of the Republic traditions and has national endorsement. the movement is expected to spread.
Four-month-old Raymond Rupe was in an Iowa City hospital after doctors removed a bolt lodged in his esophagus. The bolt had been stuffed into the infant’s mouth by his three-year-old brother, with the child initially found in Ottumwa and then transferred to Iowa City for treatment.
AMES R H Porter state college plant pathologist announces a four week school for missionaries from January 23 to February 18. The program covers agriculture rural education family life health foods nutrition food production sociology and rural organization. Porter served as an agricultural missionary in China from 1923 to 1927.
John Benson, 25, of Audubon, was fatally injured when his demonstration car crashed into a bank one mile west of the city. The crash ends Audubon county’s three year stretch without a fatal accident and mars the Jets’ otherwise best county record.
John and Ralph Hindrickson ages 10 and 12, took their father's saw and hatchet to a hillside park in Davenport and felled a large evergreen without telling parents. Police questioned them and they said they planned to tell the truth to their folks.
Harold E. Davidson of Clarinda was named as ecommerce counsel of the state ecommerce commission. Announcement was made by B. M. Richardson and Barr Kesblear, newly elected Republican member of the commission. Davidson, the Republican nominee for attorney general two years ago, has been Page County Republican chairman for eight years.
The combined Washington high school and junior college chorus presented a tableaux driven nativity with readings by Esther Hayes and Dorothy Daniel. Music featured included Beethoven and Mozart selections, Sibelius Fin landia, and Schubert Ave Maria with solos by Doris Leffler Cecil Replogle John Hughes Maxine Baxter Tone Steele and a We Three Kings trio.
Washington DC December 12 The newly appointed SEC Commissioner Edward Richer is seen as a valuable asset despite mixed financial qualifications His nine years with the CB Q ERR and fifteen years in Iowa law practice precede his 1958 house service He is expected to aid passage of pending SEC bills and provide better liaison between the SEC and Congress He is viewed as a practical political addition rather than a financial expert.
Willard Gray Harold Luers Charles Atkinson led the shepherds and angels with the B glee club Ruth Stewart directed the vocal music Mr Brayton led the string and woodwind orchestra Opal Keeney directed tableaux LaDeema Wood oversaw scenery Bertha Mae Reinert and Betty Michels accompanied. The lower floor overflowed with standing room as chairs were placed near the stage crowding the space usually occupied by the orchestra.
Roy Housman was killed and BE. S. Yiesley was seriously injured in a crash between a car and a Rock Island passenger train at a Victor crossing. Yiesley was taken to St Francis hospital in Grinnell. the train runs from Des Moines at 10 25 and does not stop at Victor.
Peter Christiansen reported the Christiansen Shell Plant on East Seventh Street suffered heavy interior damage after a Saturday night fire. The blaze began inside the building and the cause is undetermined. Fire crews saved the structure but the stock, machinery, and completed articles were heavily damaged.
Mason City dispatch reports W Karl Hall president of the Iowa State Safety Council denies planning to run for Iowa governor in 1942. Miller secretary of state elect alleged candidacy in a heated letter which Hall calls largely false and humorous. Hall closes with Christmas and New Year wishes.
Cyrus chapter of Royal Arch Masons elected Russel Goodin as high priest at the annual officers election. Wise Long was re elected king, Andrew Kelso scribe, George L. McDaniel treasurer, and A W Yard secretary. others to be appointed will be installed next month.
Report notes crowd comments as they left the venue praising the production. Many remarked on its beauty while also calling it short, a compliment suggesting the show succeeded in its brevity.
Risk Construction will tear up the cemetery road from South Iowa to Elm Grove Cemetery to prepare for grading and paving a PWA project awarded December 6. A temporary detour will reroute traffic north from the cemetery entrance, then east to South Marion Avenue. Officials aim to complete as much work as possible this winter to avoid jeopardizing the federal grant and may surface the detour for winter and next spring.
The Washington Chamber of Commerce schedules a regular meeting Thursday evening December 15 with dinner at 6 30 at the YMCA. Secretary O B H Schmitt announced the event and board members were listed as attendees.
Supt. E. A. Ralston announced an extra day of Christmas break for Washington public schools this year. The vacation runs from close of school on Friday December 16 to the morning of Tuesday January 3, shifting the return date due to New Year observance and cooperation with churches the Y M C A and local businesses.
Nearly 200 boys and adult leaders attended the final sessions of the Eastern Iowa HIV conference in Washington. The event, hosted by Hi Y groups from over 20 eastern Iowa cities, ran two days with meals by Methodist church members and banquet preparations by Ladies Aid and missionary societies.
Richard Fields of Chelan Washington arrived Saturday evening to visit his mother Mrs Al Fields and other relatives here He will be here until after Christmas.
Directors whose terms expire are George McDaniel Harry Ramseyer and Frank McFarlane. The event will be guest night with each Chamber member bringing a guest. A special program features Dean H H Kildee of Town State College at Ames delivering the message.
The Washington County Poultry Breeders association branded its fifth annual show a success with over 300 exhibits and high quality birds judged by Oscar Grow of Atlanta Mo. Joe Wolfe and wife won best bird and best display earning the Richer trophy for two consecutive years.
Judge J G Patterson ordered a short recess in the November term of district court and will return Wednesday to take up non jury matters. The Stout versus Vesely case heads the assignment and is expected to be the first trial.
Gaston Means, 68, famed swindler linked to high society schemes and the Lindbergh kidnapping hoax, died in federal prison in Springfield, Missouri from a heart ailment after serving six and a half years of a 15 year sentence for the $104,000 ransom plot against Mrs Evalyn McLean. Burial planned in Concord, North Carolina.
Washington residents are urged to support the Goodfellow fund as Christmas nears. Despite relief for essentials, organizers warn baskets depend on timely gifts and list contributors including George J. Breitenbach and the American Legion Auxiliary.
