The Washington High School Band will present its annual Christmas concert on Tuesday Dec 14 at 8 p.m. Admission is free. Venue undecided between auditorium or gymnasium due to larger band size. Public invited. directed by Lawrence Green.
Funeral services were scheduled today for Dr Ralph J Bunche United Nations undersecretary who mediated the 1949 armistice and led U N peacekeeping missions in the Congo Cyprus and Suez. Bunche who earned the 1950 Nobel Peace Prize died Thursday at age 67 after a long illness. He was the highest ranking American at the United Nations and resigned last June due to failing health.
Five teenagers and a girl friend died when their car collided with a Penn Central freight train at an unguarded crossing in Toledo. Victims were David Myles 17 driver and his brothers Dean 16 Dwight 9 Dennis 13 all of Toledo and Marilyn Donbrosky 16 of Temperance Michigan. The youths had left a Calvary Assembly of God Church meeting en route home from Elkhart Indiana.
A State Fire Marshal investigator said arson was ruled out in the Council Bluffs blaze that leveled the Cecil Daily home. Authorities believe the fire started in the basement as workers brace the first floor. Victims include Lonnie 11 and Mark 16 Daily and Tracy Robbins 11, with other family members treated for smoke inhalation. John Daily 20 serves in Vietnam. one foster child survived.
The Washington Jaycees form a six member committee to recruit doctors for Washington County. They will contact medical schools and Midwest internship hospitals to attract an M D or osteopath, and will mail letters with a pamphlet outlining the area’s facilities. Funding comes from volunteer contributions.
President Nixon secured conservative reshaping of the Supreme Court as the Senate confirmed William Rehnquist and Lewis Powell Jr. Powell and Rehnquist will join the bench January 10 after broad support. The moves balance a court long led by liberal voices and mark Nixon’s broadened influence on judicial restraint.
United Press International reports about 5,000 Indian paratroopers attacking Dacca the East Pakistan capital. India urged Pakistan forces in the east to surrender claiming no escape. The assault follows heavy fighting on land and river as India nears final collapse of Pakistani forces in East Pakistan.
Police pursue link between the Iowa City abduction of Phillip Frantz 22 and an armed $3,500 HyVee robbery in Mount Pleasant. Phillip Cuevas 31 was arrested in Fairfield and jailed on robbery charges as authorities seek a second suspect.
NATO foreign ministers in Brussels reached a compromise to start preparatory discussions for a 35 nation European security conference as soon as possible. They noted Berlin talks' progress and planned intensified bilateral contacts, with Helsinki hosting multilateral talks upon invitation. Iceland said it is reviewing U S troop basing rights at Kleivaik.
A violent December storm lashed the south and lower Midwest causing destruction to homes and trailer houses, cutting power and injuring at least 28 with three dead. Tornado warnings stretched from Arkansas and Mississippi to Ohio as the storm moved north at about 60 mph, dropping heavy rains from the Lower Mississippi Valley to the Great Lakes before clearing to colder weather north of the lakes.
Increasing cloudiness and colder tonight with lows from 10 to 15 in the north and 15 to 20 in the south. Sunday turns cloudy and cooler with a slight chance of snow and highs from the 20s in the north to the lower 30s in the south.
President Nixon signed a 15.7 billion tax cut designed to revive the economy with three-year tax reductions, a 7 percent auto tax cut, higher exemptions and deductions, export incentives, and first babysitting deductions. He praised Congress for acting near an election, calling it responsible and a Christmas tree measure for all Americans. The package extends wage and price controls through April 1973 and includes retroactive pay provisions for certain workers.
A bomb ripped through the Balmoral furniture store in Belfast's Shankill district trapping at least two people. Police, fire crews, and British army troops searched the rubble as word spread of earlier violence in a Catholic Ardoyne hall where soldiers fired into a crowd during a patrol incident.
Halcyon House local management honored Mrs Margaret O Clarkson 66 retiring superintendent at a luncheon. She became Halcyon’s third head in 1959 and took the post in May 1968. Lillian Dehne of Washington named to succeed Clarkson beginning Jan 1, 1972, with Verle Gallagher taking chair in 1972.
