UPI reports U.S. Marines from the carrier Iwo Jima fought through mud and barbed wire to seize a Viet Cong stronghold 20 miles south of Da Nang. Estimates put Communist deaths at 200 to 500 as jets bombed and napalm rained. Heavy clashes also raged 35 miles south of Saigon in Go Cong Province, signaling the Mekong Delta's biggest action in weeks. A Buddhist priest threatened self harm over alleged temple desecration by Marines, deepening political tensions at Da Nang.

Teenager Held in Vancouver Ax Murders
A 17 year old youth is in custody over the ax slayings of five family members in Vancouver British Columbia. Police describe the killings as the worst violence seen. Buddhist priest threatens self harm over statue dispute
A senior Buddhist priest in the Da Nang area threatened to disembowel himself over reports of a U S Marine statue of Buddha. A Marine investigation is underway with no results yet. Five year old Elizabeth Marie Van Denburgh died after her father Eugene L. Van Denburgh fired a 22 caliber rifle at her head while she balanced a tangerine on her head. The incident occurred in their home front yard and the father was jailed on suspicion of murder after police reported he had been drinking.

Defense Plans Advance FB111 Bomber for Air Force
