Harvest Moon pushes Viet Cong trap near Da Nang
UPI reports thousands of U S Marines in a seven month Viet Nam operation landed to trap a 1500 strong Viet Cong regiment about 20 miles south of Da Nang. The assault, called Harvest Moon, involved air and naval support, with casualties described as light for Marines and heavy for the enemy. The battle area lies roughly 335 miles northeast of Saigon, as Marine and Vietnamese forces pressed the entrenched foe in bunkers and tunnels.

William Leo Shalla, 71, of Richmond died Thursday afternoon at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City. Funeral services are set for Saturday at 10 a.m. at Holy Trinity Church in Richmond with Rev. William Snell. burial in Holy Trinity cemetery. A prayer service will be Friday 8 p.m. at Peterseim Funeral Home in Kalona. Born April 26, 1894, to Charles and Mary Shalla, he lived on a farm south of Richmond. He married Emma Critz on November 6, 1918, in Richmond. Survived by his widow, four daughters Mrs. Richard Codey of Moline, Ill., Mrs. Robert Welte Jr. of Richmond, Mrs. John Coffman of Maquoketa, and Mrs. John Fitzpatrick of Downers Grove, Ill.. thirteen grandchildren. three brothers Fred Shalla of Brighton, Leo Sharp of Marion, and Lloyd Sharp of Cedar Rapids.

A Waukon high school was destroyed by a blaze that erupted from an explosion in the basement industrial arts area. Firemen from Waukon Decorah and Postville fought the flames two hours after the 4 a.m. start, keeping them from the gym and a nearby grade school within 100 feet as the fire climbed four floors.
