Officials at Exchange National Bank of Chicago credited a savings account for Marcia Schoonover three days old after her father George, a bank officer, endorsed a check with a footprint. The unusual endorsement drew attention from bank staff on Friday.
W. S. Wilcox of Washington and Keith and Duane Yoder of Kalona were named among Iowa's 25 Master Swine Producers for 1954 at Des Moines. The award honors top producers with complete records. 125 considered, 75 submitted records. Polk County deputies resumed a large scale search for Marybelle 15 and Joy 13 McBride after they ran away Wednesday night. About 50 to 60 volunteers joined the effort following reports of the sisters hiding along the Des Moines River bottoms and an overnight find near a farm camp with their horse and provisions. The girls left with a neighbor’s horse a bedroll $22 and a pet Scottie.

Premier Pierre Mendes-France’s push to end the Tunisian fighting concluded with a near total victory. Some 2,813 rebels accepted the Franco Tunisian terms and laid down arms as the two week amnesty expired. One outlaw chieftain Taher Lassoued remained at large with 46 followers. Authorities planned one final surrender window before nightfall. General Pierre Boyer de la Tour planned a report trip to Paris to update on the situation.

Barry Carpenter eleven, son of Mr and Mrs Paul Carpenter Jr of Spencer Iowa, was fatally injured when his bicycle skidded on icy pavement and he fell into the street after emerging from an alley. Verle Lair of Spencer said he could not stop in time to avoid the boy.
Washington county was allotted 88300 for government cost sharing of soil and water conservation practices in 1955. The sum, announced by Yaro Sojka, ASC chairman, is 16600 more than 1954. Most funds will support cost sharing for approved practices completed on county farms next year.
