General Douglas MacArthur returns from Korea flight and tells reporters UN troops remain undefeated with high morale and strong battle capacity. He cites a 10 to 1 casualty advantage for UN forces over Chinese and Korean communists during their fighting retreat.
Frank Jim Rail, a 61 year old Waterloo golfer, was killed when an automobile driven by Earl D. Dodson struck him as a freight train was being switched at a crossing. Dodson was held on a drunken driving charge and a man slaughter charge was planned by Blackhawk County Attorney Blair Wood. Police said Jirsa was signaling traffic during the train switch when the crash occurred.
A disturbance from Minnesota moved east spreading light snow and freezing rain across Iowa. The Weather Bureau predicted the system would leave the state by day’s end as temperatures rise, aiding slick highways in many areas. In Griswold, Lawrence Sasse found two stray deer among his cows after bringing them in.
A package of Japanese cigarettes mailed to Mrs. Fred Gildred by her son Fred, a former Marine, on July 615 1944, arrived six years late in Houston Maine with an explanation that it had fallen behind a partition wall.
Dr Ralph J. Bunche former United Nations mediator in Palestine received the 1950 Nobel peace prize becoming the first Black and youngest laureate. He called for global freedom equality and peace as the Nobel ceremony awarded him the gold medal diploma and a prize of 51178 while other winners were honored in Stockholm.
Five hundred persons attended a mass meeting in the Methodist church marking the 10 day evangelistic crusade across Iowa. Dr Eugene Golay of Nashville and Bishop Charles Brashares broadcast on WHO Des Moines to the attendees. Fr Raymond Chadwick Iowa Wesleyan president participated as visiting minister. Robert D L Ferrell led the massed choir and John Yousling Wis organist.
Des Moines detectives report a Woodburn service station attendant saw a car matching Joseph Rogers’ vehicle. The two tone blue Oldsmobile with a Story County plate may fit Rogers description. Rogers, charged with murder in Mrs. Mary Del Vecchio’s death, is believed to seek farm work.
Iowa Secretary Clyde Spry said he may dismiss acting State Chemist Esther Johnston due to her support for Assistant State Chemist Clarence E. Miller. Spry asserts Miller was fired for unsatisfactory work tied to P-60 tests, a salt base antifreeze he approved despite Johnston’s objections. Miller seeks a hearing. Spry will require one if Miller requests it.
Howamd L. Wittiig was reelected county chairman of the Production and Marketing Administration at the county convention. Other officers chosen include Yaro Sojka as vice chairman Charles B. Custer as third member James W. Combs as first alternate and Arthur Wiley as second alternate. The PMA office in Washington hosted the Saturday morning session with committeemen from 15 townships present.
Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 2 30 in the Federated Presbyterian Church Crawfordsville with Rev Harnest Smith in charge. Mrs Dwight Brown was pianist and Mrs Claire Holmes with Mrs Joe Johnson sang. Pallbearers included Clarence Harding Earnest Clark John Mitchell Frank Gault Earl Monson. Burial followed in Crawfordsville Cemetery, Jones Funeral Home in charge.
Judge J G Patterson today filed a decision on a will construction case. He held that Aerial Christenson is entitled to a one sixth interest in the estate of Fred Muser under a codicil dated June 23, 1849. The case tested whether Mrs Christianson could claim a share of the estate.
A proposed seven power UN conference including the United States, Russia, Communist China, Britain, France, Egypt and India is urged to discuss a peaceful settlement in Korea with a cease fire and UN principles guiding the talks. Indian assurances reportedly suggested China would refrain from invading South Korea.
Governors adopt a hands off policy as wholesale egg prices climb to a 30 year high. The CME board discussed emergency measures but decided no action is necessary. December eggs briefly dropped a 2 cent limit, with last week each session hitting the limit. Retail prices have risen about 46 percent since June 15.
The third degree will be conferred at the Masonic Temple on Wednesday evening at 8 oclock by the past masters. Refreshments will be served after the ceremony.
In Tokyo Army Hospital and its annex, about 1 500 patients, mostly Korea casualties, await Christmas. A tree in every ward, Christmas meals, and parties are planned with Red Cross support. Lt. Col. Ellis Arkus leads the effort with community ties and local entertainments for patients and staff.
Tokyo dispatch reports 20 000 U S Marines and army troops rejoining United Nations forces in Korea. General MacArthur proclaims undefeated morale and high battle efficiency as the fighting column withdraws to allied lines near Hamhung after a costly battle. Maj. Gen. Oliver P. Smith leads the withdrawal with the line set to defend Seoul as the 8th Army reshapes a new front south of the 38th parallel.
Merlyn Wesely Detweter of route one Wellman drove over a hill crest and struck Calvin Sealf’s abandoned Kinross car on the Keokuk Washington county line road. No injuries were reported though both vehicles were damaged. The Sealf car was parked partly in a ditch and partly on the roadway. The sheriff’s office investigated the incident.
Hollywood police investigated the fatal ambush of attorney Samuel F. Rummel 44 a defender of figures including Mickey Cohen and Tony Cornero Stralla. A shotgun blast tore through his neck as he arrived home. Police considered multiple angles, while neighbors reported Cohen's recent visits. A pistol gun lay wedged in tree forks above the scene.
The 1st Marine Division suffered over 30 percent casualties, about 6,500, during the withdrawal from Chosin to Korea’s east coast. No split of dead, wounded, and missing was provided, though dispatches note roughly 4,000 wounded were flown out with some of the 7th Infantry. Lt. Gen. Lemuel C. Shepherd said troops remained high in spirit during a visit.
Columbus Junction resident Cora Klotz 80 died in Bellevue hospital in Muscatine after a fall at Restopia nursing home last week that broke her hip. Born September 13, 1870, she lived in the area most of her life, with a sister Mrs. Joe Guinn and brother Jerry Klotz among survivors. Burial set for Columbus City Cemetery. Funeral arrangements pending at Stephens Funeral Home.
President Truman convenes top level White House conferences with Democratic leaders to shape wage price controls and consider declaring a national emergency this week. Sen. Taft invited to join, with discussions focusing on emergency preparations and possible radio address.
Tickets for the Eddy Howard dance at the armory tonight will be at the door. Eddy Howard and his orchestra will perform under joint sponsorship of the national guard unit and the ordnance reserve unit.

Northeast tonight mostly cloudy, lows 14 to 16 northeast and 20 to 25 southwest. Winds vary with 20 mph from northwest elsewhere. Tuesday northwest winds around 20 mph. Outlook shows cold nights, possible snow flurries east Wednesday. Shippers forecast signals wind speeds by region.
