Weighing of Washington County 4-H and FFA beef projects is postponed one week. The beeves will now be weighed on December 17 instead of December 10. Weigh-ins can occur at any of the four sites previously announced, with the date shifted by a week.
In Council Bluffs Iowa Benjamin Moore a longtime veterinarian and his wife Hazel were found dead in their two story home after a neighbor reported the fire. Firefighters entered quickly but intense heat and smoke delayed rescue. Cause of the blaze is under investigation.
Seven female custodial workers in Bettendorf Iowa receive 26564.11 in back pay under a UPI report from US District Court. The payment resolves a Labor Department lawsuit filed in 1976 alleging equal pay violations of the Fair Labor Standards Act.
U.S. Customs agents seized a 42-foot fishing trawler carrying about 15 tons of marijuana valued at 6 to 10.5 million dollars in Wilmington, N C. Three men were arrested and two suspects fled during the dawn raid as officials sought a second vessel believed to be the mother ship.

Iowa Governor Robert D. Ray criticized a Polk County lawsuit challenging a 290000 study of the Department of Social Services management. Senators James Redmond and Norman Jesse allege improper fund transfers by Comptroller Marvin Selden without legislative approval. Ray says the suit exposes overreach and warns some lawmakers want to run all of government while claiming to set policy.

Wellman farmer Bernard Berg faces up to 80000 in damages after 1202 hogs suffocated in a confined building when an electrically operated fan failed and a backup auto switch did not engage. About 400 hogs weighed 200 pounds or more and were destined for market. neighbors saved about 200. Berg notes the incident may be the county’s largest livestock loss and cites ongoing heating needs due to reduced hog numbers.
