Washington reports a 0.7 percent jump in the Labor Department Wholesale Price Index for November, second consecutive sizable month, driven by a 3 percent rise in farm prices and a 1.7 percent surge in processed foods and feeds. Industrial and finished goods edged up 0.4 percent, easing inflation concerns per White House projections.
Milwaukee Road announces closing of its Washington depot at 428 N Iowa Ave with plans to remove and sell the building. Shipping agent Bob Capps notes interest from veterans groups, a day care, a lawyer, and local businessmen for reuse. Depot built in 1903 remains solid. agency to close Jan 16 with crew disbanding Feb 21.
The ERA meeting sponsored by the YWCA Public Affairs, planned for Thursday evening December 8, is postponed due to weather and will be held in January.
Community committeemen of the ASC will attend the county ASC convention Saturday December 17 at the Washington County ASCS office 108 West Jefferson Street. The convention opens at 10 a.m. to elect a county committeeman for a three year term and two alternates for one year each.
Lew McFadden was re elected chief of the Washington volunteer fire department as the firemen held their annual old timers dinner meeting at the fire hall Wednesday night. All former members were invited along with present members Bob Zager named first assistant chief Ron Armstrong second assistant chief and Glenn Beauchamp secretary treasurer.
A fast moving storm dumped up to 4 inches of snow in eastern Iowa with teams of highways buried in snow. Forecasters warned of the coldest temperatures of the season as arctic air moved in across the central United States, bringing subzero readings and dangerous wind chills.
The new 57 unit Bavarian style motor inn located about a mile northwest of town on highways 1 and 92 hosts an open house from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday. Built with capital from 10 area investors, construction began in fall 1976 and is now nearly complete. The facility includes two suites, large meeting rooms and handicap accessible rooms. Washington County Care Facility invites donations of used Christmas cards sewing scraps yard goods felt yarn floss thread costuming dresses gloves and more. Donations may be left at the facility near Washington or by contacting the Journal newsroom.
Seven men were sentenced in Washington County District Court on Wednesday, five on drunk driving charges with deferred judgments and one year probation for all. Paul J. Hagist, Richard D. Evans, Jack L. Sanders, Charles D. Curtis, and Paul W. Chapek received deferrals expunging convictions if terms are met. Jimmy D. Litwiller Jr. got a 12 month deferral on criminal trespass with restitution to be paid. Ramon Ramirez was fined $75 for shoplifting over $20. Bruce D. Gearin’s work release was revoked for jail damage. Timothy Hauser faces Dec. 30 sentencing after pleading guilty to possession of amphetamines.
