A compromise two year authorization of 4.16 billion dollars for the war on poverty passes the Senate 62 to 16 and goes to the House for final action. The plan hands local officials control of community action programs, with 1.98 billion for 1968 and 2.18 billion for 1969 for OEO.

A Rock Island Railroad motor freight depot in Oskaloosa Iowa was destroyed by fire just before midnight. The Oskaloosa fire department responded to the first alarm and remained on scene overnight. Several Oska loose Produce buildings on the depot’s west end were lightly damaged as the blaze spread, but the flames were contained to those structures.
