In Tel Aviv and Jaffa area fighting after the United Nations partition vote. Hagana forces killed 70 Arabs and wounded 100 in a counter attack while 12 Jews and three Britons died. Over 97 people died in the last 24 hours.
The Scott County Medical Society and Iowa Congress of Parents and Teachers president support Health Commissioner Walter Bierring in opposing Gov Blue to secure federal funds for state health work. Cedar Rapids health agency heads urge citizens to write the governor for action before Dec 31 to avoid Iowa losing about 2.07 million dollars in federal aid.
Rome reports the communist controlled chamber of labor postponed a planned general strike for at least 24 hours. The move followed rising tensions as workers demanded Christmas bonuses for the unemployed a large public works program and punishment for police and government officials involved in protests. Premier Alcide de Gasperi called the ultimatum a communist bid to overthrow his government.
The Chicago based Progressive Party invited Henry A Wallace to run for president as a third party candidate. If he enters, Wallace could shift ballots in states like California and New York, potentially aiding Republicans in 1948. Baldwin estimates a 60 percent chance he leads a ticket with ballot access in about 40 states.
Des Moines reports a break in the cold snap as temperatures fell below zero overnight in northern Iowa. Spencer hit 12 below. Burlington topped 30 for the high. Fort Dodge Sioux City Charles City Estherville and Mason City also recorded subzero readings.
Washington county Farm Bureau volunteers launched the 1948 membership drive aiming to add 1400 members. Township quotas set a 10 percent increase, with 200 workers contacting neighbors this week.
About 600 federal inmates at McNeil Island in Tacoma began a hunger strike protesting meatless Tuesdays and eggless Thursdays. The strike started yesterday as officials consider disciplinary steps while strikers continue to work. The prison houses about 900 inmates, located 18 miles from Tacoma.
Last night burglars pried open a window at the Red Brick country school south of town. Evidence shows stored items were disturbed but no serious damage. A bottle of beer and several cigarettes were found. a vase was missing, indicating it was the target of the break in.
A youth conference banquet will be held Friday at 6 30 PM in the Presbyterian church. Tickets cost one dollar and are available from Dave Livingston Jr or Bel Arnold for high school age youths of all denominations. Jim Rayburn of Colorado will speak at the banquet. A rally for high school and junior college students follows Saturday at eight o clock with Mr Rayburn as speaker.
Des Moines reports the state highway commission will widen Iowa 13 foot highways to 22 feet next spring with full resurfacing. A bituminous surface will be added to many deteriorated pavings on wide roads, following a study trip to Illinois Michigan and Indiana. Governor Blue reviewed the plan after the trip and the group will present a long range road improvement program to the highway study committee meeting tomorrow.
A notice states quotas by Saturday night will be furnished an oyster supper for the entire membership of the town ship farm bureau.
The administration submitted a bill to Congress proposing government power to reimpose food and fuel rationing and to buy up entire crops at government prices. The measure, presented by Secretary Harriman, would grant priority controls over scarce materials and implement President Truman’s 10 point anti inflation plan. House debates over foreign aid amendments threaten rapid passage of a $590 million emergency package.
In Burlington Iowa on December 9 Jerry Richards two week old son of Mr and Mrs Olen Richards suffocated under blankets in a family car left with two older children while parents went into a store. The baby died en route to a hospital.
Dr. R. E. Cooper, superintendent at Woodward state institution, resigns effective Friday after a brief tenure begun Sept 1. He cites his children's health requiring a warmer climate as the reason for stepping down.
Further assignments of food for use in school lunches have been received by Supt. W. A. Hr de. The present consignments are evaporated apples from San Francisco and dried milk from Chicago. These foods are government surplus commodities distributed to about 50 schools in this part of the state. Washington has been made a distributing center for this pact of Iowa, in charge of Mr. Erbe.
Kalona resident John Nickol aged 92 died last night after injuries from a fall three weeks earlier. Born May 22, 1855 in Middletown Kentucky, he lived in Kalona 40 years with no known survivors. Graveside services set for Wednesday at Sharon Hill cemetery conducted by Dr. Fred E. Miller. arrangements by L. A. Jones funeral home.
Washington residents will hear Handel's The Messiah at the Washington Methodist Church next Sunday evening. The choir of 74 voices, directed by Mrs Eloise Sorden with John Yousling at the piano, will include guest singers from other churches. A free will offering will aid the presentation with no admission charge.
The Washington high school band directed by Melvin Hill will perform a Thursday evening concert in the high school auditorium at eight. The program includes Marches, Overtures, Scenes from the Sierras, Peer Gynt Suite, Christmas pieces, and a full wind and percussion lineup with student conductor.
Washington's temperature fell to nine degrees last night, not a new local record, after dipping to seven earlier this winter.

Sam Henry sues Charles Martin also known as Martin Construction for wages owed from June 7, 1946, at 85 cents an hour rising to $1.50 with work proficiency, claiming $376.41 due after terminating July 25, 1947, and alleges failure to settle per oral contract. Attorney L. J. Kejoe represents Henry.
