A Rock Island yards resident of ten years, Frank Worth, 75, is believed to have fallen asleep while tending a stove after a night fire. His burned body was found seated before the stove, the Rock & Land railroad area in Indianola identified as his home.
The national labor relations board announced a secret vote among Hawkeye Steel Products Co. workers in Waterloo to decide if they want representation by United Farm Equipment Workers of America Local 1-CIO. A majority vote will authorize bargaining with the company.
Gail Squires, 22, of Estherville, was injured when an airplane crashed south of the city. He was alone in the craft and taken to Colemans hospital with arm and jaw fractures and several teeth lost. He was partly conscious but could not give a statement.
Lois Tallman and Clark Kaney of Iowa City lead in Robert Sherwood’s Abe Lincoln in Illinois at the University of Iowa theater. Ruth Weber of Columbus Junction portrays Mary Todd with Katey, an Iowa City student and National Theater Conference $1,000 award winner. More than 200 students participate in the production.
Raymond Carl Nelson, 28, a Logan drug store clerk, disappeared Tuesday night after riding with J A Peterson to Council Bluffs. His 75 year old wife is critically ill in a Council Bluffs hospital and his six month old daughter is seriously ill with pneumonia. Relatives seek help from officials. Nelson reportedly planned to report at an Omaha airport for work the next morning.
Tokyo broadcast reports Foreign Minister Yosuke Matsuoka stating that Japan would ally with Germany and Italy if the United States enters WWII, but only if the U S is judged aggressor and if all three Axis powers agree on the alliance.
About 1.41 million wartime prisoners in Germany study German in camps near Berlin as a key pastime. French and English prisoners, plus others, work in fields and remain under Geneva rules with many stationed in sub camps. Prisoners express desire to return home and question U S policy.

Mrs A E Atchison announces the committee is ready to receive toys for the children's Christmas party. Toys, especially those needing repairs, should be left at city hall early this week for repair by Wednesday. Contact Mrs Atchison or committee members to arrange pickup.
The Duke of Windsor and the Duchess arrive in Miami to have the duchess undergo a major dental operation at St Francis Hospital Miami Beach. They travel from the Bahamas aboard the Southern Cross and plan to return to Nassau Friday.
Thousands of Danes gathered outside Haderslag jail in Copenhagen area until four this morning cheering the police and jeering Nazis involved in clashes yesterday. Six policemen and several Nazis were wounded. authorities questioned the Nazis about the fighting.
Allen Nichols McElwain, a longtime Washington businessman who ran a livery and feed stable, died Saturday evening at his daughter’s home in Krotter. He was born July 19, 1856 in Davenport, Iowa and moved to Washington in 1892. Funeral Tuesday at 2 PM at L. A. Jones funeral home Washington. He leaves daughter Eather Trotter, son Howard of Denver, and three grandchildren.
Des Moines reports at least two fatalities over the weekend. Edward Mein died in an automobile crash while another man was burned to death in separate incidents.
Clarence Lewis, 52, pleads guilty to bootlegging in Kalona before Justice of the Peace J. E. Bovee. Bound over to the grand jury under $1,005 bond, unable to furnish. ready to plead in district court. Sheriff H. Putnam found two pints of whiskey at the Kalona tavern where youths aged 15 to 20 drank. Lewis ran the tavern about four months after moving from North English. Nine underage individuals were present. one boy admitted buying whiskey for $1.50. Conviction could bring up to one year in jail or state prison and a fine up to $1,000, or both.
The War Department disclosed that only a limited number of free arms will be available for home guard units created in various states to replace National Guardsmen called to active federal service. Each state could be allowed 1917 Enfield 30 caliber rifles 1907 gun slings 1917 bayonets and bayonet scabbards. No uniforms are available.

Goldwin Smith and Louis Pelzer speaking.
The Washington county beef producers banquet will be held in the community room of the Y M C A on Thursday evening, December 12. Principal speaker is George D. Haskell from the State University of Iowa who will discuss how the war affects agriculture. Dinner starts at 6 46 with roast beef on the menu. Musical numbers feature Phil Nelson and accordion, the Walker trio, and Gloria Morris. BE L Stewart of Jackson township will serve as toastmaster, Knotek to present him. O Schmitt, secretary of the Washington Chief of Commerce, will give a brief voice, and J W Chandler, Washington county agent, will lead a period recognizing beef production achievements.
