A court case from Oelwein concerns Lam an 28 charged with assault with intent to inflict great bodily injury on six men and one woman. The complainant Mrs Hazel Struckman Sherman was the defendant's bride of a month at the time of the alleged attack in July and has since obtained a divorce.
The Sioux City Gas and Electric Company says it will spend 90000 dollars to construct a new 200 foot smokestack at its Big Sioux River power plant. Work starts in spring and should finish by fall, replacing two smaller smoke tubes.
Keith Francis, who left Cedar Valley hospital after a knee injury, is back in the hospital with his left hand caught in a corn picker causing multiple bone fractures and deep cuts.
Iowa City police filed reckless driving charges against Sam K. Lane a University of Iowa sophomore from Rock Island Illinois after his car struck another vehicle jumped a curb and damaged a house porch and tree Lane and Ruth Ann Irens a Mason City sophomore were bruised in the collision.
Waterloo, Stephen Unger four months died at home of his parents Harold and Mrs. Unger after a play session. Coroner Sidney Smith said autopsy showed bilateral pneumonia. Parents reported illness overnight, then the child slept at 3 a.m.
H F Folkers of Greene faced charges after Iowa patrols stopped his car for a missing tail light. Cops say he sped off then was caught with four gallons of alcohol. He also faced reckless driving improper registration and tail light violation charges.
Two thieves stealing government sealed corn from James McCarville farm were stranded when their truck bogged down in mud after a warmer night. A neighbor alerted Monona County Sheriff Melvin Peterson as the culprits fled the scene abandoning the vehicle. The sheriff noted the theft is a federal offense.
In Keota Iowa district court a jury found 86 year old Faye Ayers guilty of assault with intent to commit murder for allegedly firing at his divorced wife Mildred Reiss as she rode home with Russell Wade on September 20. The shot shattered a rear window but caused no injuries.
A group led by Congressman Martin and including Theos Marvin and others left Washington at their own expense for a ship voyage through the canal zone. The trip aims to review defense preparations, following an earlier official air tour by Martin. They plan to return to New York City on December 2.

The First Baptist church selects Rev Alfred Trenerry of Huron South Dakota to serve as pastor beginning January first. He brings training from Central College Bel la and Rochester Theological Seminary and has pastored in Malvern and Harlan Iowa and Niles and Ionta Michigan. He served overseas with the YMCE and in the army of occupation and is active in Lions Club Rotary and American Legion. His wife also aids church work.
A Des Moines report recounts the 1890 meteor that struck Winnebago County, Iowa. The Iowa Supreme Court ruled landowners as rightful possessors when a meteor embeds in their property and explained the rule of occupancy by finder.
The War Department awarded contracts totaling $3,563,389 to expand production facilities for aircraft engines. Aviation Manufacturing Corporation of Williamstown Pennsylvania earned $2,580,581 to expand existing plants, while Patrial Engine and Airplate Corporation of Hagerstown Maryland received $982,808 for a new plant and expansion, accelerating aerial defense efforts.
Uruguayan cruiser Uruguay says British battleship Warsprite pursues a German raider after Carnarvon Castle engagement. Carnarvon Castle, loaded with wounded, heads to Montevideo for repairs. Warsprite reportedly speeds northward at 24 knots, faster than the raider.
Postmaster M C DeLong reports Christmas Seals are showing up more on mail and packages at the Washington post office. He notes the first seal is a symbol of the season and recalls Einar Holboel of Denmark who conceived selling an extra stamp to fund anti tuberculosis work. Seals may be used on all classes of mail and decorate greetings, packages, bills, and business letters.
State Highway Patrol stopped a coal truck on the highway as the machine license was obscured. The truck, overloaded by two tons, had driver Kenneth Vaillips of West Liberty fined $25 and costs by Justice 4. KB. Hores. The coal moved from an Oskaloosa site to West Liberty.
Divorce granted by Judge Frank Beehly includes custody of the couple’s three children. Lillian Pearl Gregory receives custody of their minor son Richard Benson Gregory, three, while Samuel Edgar Gregory retains custody of Mary Lou, six, and Samuel Kartlett, five.
