Madrid reports a long planned revolution spreading to a dozen towns in the northeast. The government mobilized forces as the uprising began in Zaragoza and Barcelona, with bombings street fights and a railway wreck noted. Ten killed and fifteen wounded among civil guards and civilians, sixty arrested.
Three features announced for the church this week include a talk by Mrs. Leslie Yaw of Sheldon Jackson College Sitka Alaska at the evening Young People worship. A special song by a hidden choir will illuminate a Bible in the darkened room during Bible Sunday, and the third in a series of layman testimonials on Why I am a Christian will be given.
Washington teams split results as otumwa hostsHarper McIntyre Hardware 465 to 32 victory for the Y club. Walter Wells and Dale Fuhr lead with 12 points each while McClure Little and Nusenberg contribute. Marshalltown junior college beats Washington 48 to 16 with ex Marshalltown star at center. Next Wednesday the Cards travel to Aledo for Roosevelt military academy game.
Funeral services for W C Babeock were held at 10 a m today at the L A Jones funeral home led by Rev A A Wing. Interment followed at Wood lawn cemetery with pallbearers James Zeek Oren Helwick Lou Meek Ed Bovee Palmer Babcock and Bert Babeork.
Journal staff hosted a dinner at the Sider home on South Iowa Avenue to bid farewell to Paul Gorham who leaves the paper to become sales manager for H. A. Baking Company. The gathering of editors and friends offered best wishes, with humorous quips about bread and a note that Gorham will stay as a Washington County neighbor.
I Rothschild has accepted invitations to speak at Beth el Presbyterian church northeast of town Sunday morning at 11 and at the Cotter church Sunday evening at 7 30.
Mrs George Dempsey returns to Davenport from a week visiting her sister Miss Celestine Marie and brothers Dr J A Marie and Will Marie at their homes in Davenport.
The Iowa House approved a bill to gradually cut and eventually eliminate valuation assessments on motor license fees. It lowers the minimum registration fee from ten to seven dollars and taxes fourth registration at 75 percent, fifth at 50 percent, sixth at 25 percent, with eventual elimination.
Harmony club at Mrs N Hagans home elected officers with Mrs Winnie Robison as president and Mrs Bertha Spielman as vice president and Mrs Nellie Hagans as treasurer. Pleasant Valley Farm Bureau met with 28 members and two guests in attendance. Harriet Winter returned home from Muscatine after a week with sister Mrs Ellen Rosenberger and nephew Charles Rosenberger.
Judge Hamilton adjourns court today until next Saturday December 16 when he will return to Washington for another day of the November term. He held court at Sigourney next week and miscellaneous business was handled. In the Morrison guardianship foreclosure against Palmer et al a decree appointing a receiver was issued. Jordan vs Riordan trustee ship matter completed with a decree. In the Haven estate authority to bring suit granted. In the Tansey estate auditor directed to issue a warrant for the heir James W Tansey. Tuesday evening at the Quality cafe plans were made for the Holiday Season.
Santa Claus arrived in Washington after a long journey from the north and spent the forenoon greeting hundreds of children downtown. He spoke to each child at the band stand and handed out candy, then led a parade around the square with a reindeer team and five huskies as Tantak, his Eskimo helper, accompanied him toward the next town.
Miss Maggie Hamil departs Ainsworth for Missouri where she will spend the winter. Her nephew Fred Walker and niece Emma Walker accompany her and visit relatives. Mrs Will Miller and daughter Betty and Phyllis Jean joined Miss fffie McCreedy for a Sunday visit. Delta Delt Bridge club held a meeting with twelve members. Myrtle Thoma won a bingo score prize and Grace Stone hosts a Christmas exchange luncheon in two weeks. Edith Richards was elected worthy matron of the Eastern Star with Latimer Davis as worthy patron and other officers elected. installation planned next meeting. An oyster supper followed a shippers association meeting at the school gym.
Mrs Anna Helle Marshall Olinger died at her son William Olinger’s home in Ainsworth on December 8. She was born July 15 1860 near Wheeling West Virginia and married George J Olinger in 1878. Seven sons were born, five survive Will Don Otis George and Ellis, with two brothers in Winfield and seventeen grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
Two independent basketball teams from Morning Sun met local Crawfordsville contenders in the school gym. Crawfordsville won 27 to 21 in the first game while Morning Sun took the second 31 to 26. The event was supervised by Supt. Denis Jones.
The Washington high school band of 60 members performed a lively program in the auditorium. Milburn A. McKay led a polished concert featuring Safranek's Atlantis suite and Saint Saens Mili taire Francaise. Vera Stutsman and Maurice Mayo drew praise with solo moments and a novelty trombone slide whistle. The audience joined in singing Let Me Call You Sweetheart and The Star Spangled Banner. A Messiah selection was promised for Thursday night.
A light snow and cooler temperatures bring a winter feel to Washington today. An approaching warm spell is forecast for tonight. The Misses Paula Tracy and Thelda Tracy will visit Miss Ruth Moenck and Miss Josephine Graul in Iowa City Sunday.
