Newton column reports Fred Maytag rebutting Philip Murray of the CIO. Maytag says Murray’s charge that washing machines and other consumer goods are being withheld is false and insults company management and 2000 workers. He argues a full capacity washer plants still cannot meet four years of demand.
One Ottumwa public school closed on Wednesday and about a quarter of the 6 500 public school students were absent due to influenza and other ailments. St Patrick s parochial school also closed as only 75 of its 184 pupils attended classes.
DECORAH two farmers from three miles north of here suffered left hand finger losses while clearing corn equipment. Galen D Barth had four fingers crushed from a clogged mechanical picker and Jones Langass age 32 lost two fingers clearing a corn shredder.
Mrs Earl Jones and her 14 year old son Roy Earl Jones died after she soaked their clothes with fuel oil and struck a match. Mrs Jones had been a patient in a mental institution and died three hours after reaching a Marengo hospital. Doctor Irvin J Sinn reported both were badly burned and unlikely to survive.
In a civil service commission ruling on Wednesday Carl M. Sligdon's discharge from the Ottumwa police force was sustained. Two dismissed officers were returned to duty with no punishment and two received 60 day suspensions. Higdon ends nearly 23 years with Ottumwa police.
Governor Robert D. Bute appoints Hal H. Lang Alfred Dement Wayne S. Raymond and Reuben R. Hargrove to the Iowa real estate commission. Terms run one to four years starting January 1 with Secretary of State Wayne M. Ropes as chairman.
Five Navy torpedo bombers vanished after a routine flight from Fort Lauderdale. A vast search involving an escort ship Solomon and multiple aircraft and rescue vessels from coast guard Navy and Army was launched over the Atlantic. No distress messages were received and the crews names were not released.
A car owned and driven by Menno W. Miller of Wellman struck a 500 pound calf on highway 22 near Kalona. The vehicle left the road and overturned. Miller suffered a facial blow. his wife, a passenger, received a gash above her eye, heavy bleeding, and a back injury. She was taken to Mercy hospital Town City. Car damage was about $400. The calf belonged to Ora Hochstetler of Kalona.
Former ambassador Hurley testifies before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee charging that Under-Secretary Dean Acheson wrecked U S policy in Iran. He names five State Department officials and says diplomats interfered with and defeated American aims as Iran faces a revolt.
Three Scranton brothers sons of Mr and Mrs Jank Scranton of Washington were discharged from the army Wayne M Scranton served three years in the army air corps ground forces and will live in Falls Village Conn his service included Hawaii Wade F Scranton served three and a half years as an air corps engineer with Africa and Italy service and plans to return to Ottumwa Corporal Rovert KE Scranton served three years in the medical department with the air corps saw duty at Guam and Saipan and is at his parents home in Scranton
Harold T. Wehr was elected chancellor commander at the Knights of Pythias lodge meeting in the K P hall with good attendance. Other officers elected included Rollie Jurging and George McAvoy. Bill Young, Bob Lewis and Gene Nicholson were knighted. Boyd Mael of Ottumwa attended as grand district deputy. representatives from West Chester and Brighton were present. An oyster supper followed the meeting.
Township meetings were held last night in three townships to form the new farm program organization. Names listed include Franklin James W. Combs as chairman and Crawford Holly E. Feltz as chairman. chairmen will also serve as delegates to the county meeting Saturday to name officers and committees.
Survivor says Captain Charles McVay ordered crew to abandon the cruiser Indianapolis after the explosion. Navy charges he failed to issue a timely order before it sank, with 300 plus missing. Coxswain Edward Teeves testifies McVay was on the bridge and gave the abandonment order.
The OPA sets price ceilings at 15 dollars for raincoats and 22.50 dollars for pea jackets. About 500000 raincoats and 35000 pea coats are to be sold under the program.

Althea Elizabeth Montgomery a well known Washington county teacher died at St Luke's hospital Cedar Rapids after a week long illness. Born May 14 1879 in Washington Iowa she taught at Blanchard Sterning College Washington High and Junior College headed Knoxville College English department during wartime and held degrees from Iowa State Teachers College and the State University of Iowa. Funeral arrangements are pending with L A Jones Funeral Home.
News of the death of Althea Montgomery comes as a shock to many young people in the community who were in her classes at Washington high school and junior college during her long teaching service.
Returns from Washington Christmas seals arrive rapidly, totaling 572 dollars. About half of the envelopes sent have been returned and organizers hope the rest come back within a few days.

Mrs Vera Caroline Smart 41 wife of William Smart died at 6 05 pm at her home 402 South Iowa avenue after a brief illness. She suffered a heart attack at the Smart Implement company store they operated and was taken home where she died. She was a prominent businesswoman managing the implement firm during wartime and afterward. Surviving are her husband three sisters three brothers and other relatives. Funeral services are planned Friday 2 pm at L A Jones funeral home with Davenport services Saturday at 1 pm at Hill Fredericks mortuary Davenport followed by burial in Fairmont cemetery Davenport.
United Press reports CIO Automotive Workers and General Motors officials resumed talks with no strings attached to settle the 16 day walkout. Amid surprise developments, wage demands and cooling off provisions under Truman plans were discussed as Congress acts on machinery to end labor disputes.

Dr. and Mrs. William A. Boice and son John Allison II departed Iowa City yesterday morning for Chicago to visit Dr. Boice’s sister Mrs. T. D. Anderson and family and to spend time with friends.
An order filed with the district court clerk cites Judge P. J. Siegers ruling in the November 19 will construction case for Clayton A. Neiswanger. The will is to be construed to give one third of the estate to each sister Grace Hendricks and Jessie M. Hough and to the foster daughter Mary Elizabeth Neiswanger after small bequests are honored.
