Des Moines report quotes state health commissioner Dr Walter L Bierring warning that tularemia or rabbit fever may wipe out the state's rabbit population within weeks. He urges hunters and others to use rubber gloves when dressing rabbits and stresses thorough cooking to kill germs.
The Iowa Supreme Court dismissed the Iowa State Bar Association petition seeking an integrated state bar. The action was taken on the association’s own motion. A separate item reports Granger miner John Lewis, 59, survived a slate fall 325 feet underground and crawled to safety with injuries.
In Knoxville, 371 students vote 14 against in a referendum approving an exemption from the adminion fee for athletes and others in school activities. The change ends the strike by the first string basketball team over payment of the fee.
Two New Melleray abbey monks from Ireland, Patrick Burden Brother Kevin and Matthew J. O Donnell Brother Thomas, were among 21 immigrants naturalized in United States district court in Dubuque.
Glenn Mitchell aged 34 and Gilbert Williams aged 28, both described as Negroes, were ordered held for the grand jury on charges of possession and sale of marijuana. They were arrested by state and federal officers after a series of raids.

Mrs. Mary Grant, aged 195, recalled hosting Jesse James for dinner at her Adsir home long ago. Report says she may have been the oldest resident in the state. A Missouri visitor once came asking for dinner. the next day James robbed a nearby train in one of the era’s earliest heists.

Coroners in separate Iowa counties decided not to hold inquests into two family killings that killed four people. In Sioux City Alvin G. DeWitt, 42, shot his former wife after she remarried and then killed himself. In Belleview Louis Efferding, 63, was found after a fatal incident along the Mississippi River.
The city council discussed asking the Iowa State Highway Commission to pave extensions of state primary roads inside city limits. The Street and Alley Committee was authorized to investigate and report back. The discussion was favorable and paving may proceed with little or no city cost. Routine bills and minor business completed the meeting.

The Washington County Poultry Breeders association completed plans for the show opening tomorrow at the city hall. Entries are accepted all day tomorrow. Halifax dispatch reports a mine disaster as a steel hawser failed and a 20 car underground train plunged down a mile long shaft. About 40 to 50 workers were injured while 30 are believed dead, with 14 bodies recovered by mid day and many others trapped near the shaft bottom.
Mrs Christiann Bumgartner, 86, died about 12:30 this morning at her daughter’s home near Germanville nine miles south of Brighton after a week long illness with pneumonia. Born November 1 1852 in Ft Madison she was one of eight children. She married Christian Bumgartner in 1876 and lived on a Germanville area farm until his 1917 death. Survived by three children Mrs Will Craft of Germanville Mrs Harry Isenhart near Batavia and John Bumgartner of Packwood one sister Mrs Ella Otten of Ft Madison eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Burial will be in Germanyville cemetery.
The trial of Laird Hawkins of Ainsworth for operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated continued through the afternoon with evidence for the defense. The jury was impaneled yesterday and the state’s case began yesterday, with further testimony this morning. County Attorney Richard Stewart represents the state and L. J. Kehoe defends.
About 660 Italian students in black shirts rallied in Rome today shouting for Corsica and Tunis to be ceded to Italy. They encircled the French embassy near Ambassador Andre Fransois Poncet as police and plainclothes officers formed a treble cordon. Two infantry companies stood by in side streets for riot control.

Three men were killed and a fourth fatally injured when a westbound Northwestern City of Denver streamliner struck their automobile at a crossing near Colo. Victims were Charles Garcia Reginaldo Duarte and Inglis Duarte of Newton and Jesus Zaragoza 50 of Colo. The train traveled 75 to 80 mph and carried the car a quarter mile. the wig wag signal was operating.
Dr. D. C. Barrett and Blanche Robertson will represent Washington county hospital at a typing school in Iowa City Wednesday through Friday. The event starts a series of pneumococcus typing courses for hospital lab technicians and physicians managing typing stations. About 25 lab workers and 12 physicians are registered for this first course, with a similar turnout expected for the December session.
W M Tweeten of Washington Dairy addressed Rotarians on the city council milk ordinance as a boost to public health.
