At a YMCA solicitation meeting, volunteers reported pledges totaling 5083.73 with about 200 prospects unsent yet. The drive aims for a 7500 budget, to be continued until reached, with reorg planned after a final canvass day and ongoing efforts to recruit more donors.
This evening at 7:45 the Leaders, a YMCA team, face the Ollie Independents on the gym floor with Hunt center Crone and Klesey forwards and Freshwaters Kolosick guards. The Ollie squad reportedly includes former college players. West Chester beat Washington Independents 12 to 12 in a rough game, and Washington HS meets University HS tomorrow at Iowa City.
Washington December 6 President Coolidge sent nominations to the Senate naming Claude R Porter and Clyde B Atchison to the Interstate Commerce Commission for reappointment both men from Iowa and Oregon respectively with the action recorded as nominations from the president.
Des Moines Dec 6 The 1929 Iowa State Fair will run August 21 to 30. The dates were set at Chicago after a conference of 85 fairs and expositions from the United States and Canada. Aviation will be stressed at all fairs as a highlight.
Secretary James J. Davis pushes extending the quota system to all western hemisphere nations, including Mexico, amid White House cabinet splits on immigration. Kellogg cautions Latin America and Canada relations could suffer, while supporters argue the move curbs industrial labor influx and protects American interests.
County election candidates filed expense accounts with the last day for filings. Republicans reported varying outlays mainly for newspaper advertising and an assessment form from the county campaign committee. Names and amounts included Marion George 20 Edna P 42. vis, Charles M. Hospital board member costs were zero.
Maynard Brown will formally open a modern service station at the corner of Far Washington street and South Second Ave. The attractive building will house indoor work rooms and expand Brown’s operations beyond service to other motorist needs. Built by Winfield Smouse, the facility provides larger, more comfortable quarters for Brown and his crew.
Northern Iowa and Minnesota officers hunted two young bandits who robbed the Little Rock First National Bank of 10000 dollars. Four customers were inside the bank after 4 pm when the robbers forced them into the vault with cashier W. L. Lindeman and assistant Stella Odens. The pair fled in a green car with Minnesota plates, likely headed toward Minnesota life.
At the monthly meeting of county associate superintendents and principals, February 21 was fixed for the annual county declamatory contest at the high school. Attendees included school officials from Crawfordsville, Brighton, West Chester, Kalona, Wellman, and Washington. after business a dinner and a gym viewing of the Brighton Washington basketball game followed.
London dispatch reports the king's condition alternating between encouraging and alarming as his system fights infection. Morning bulletin notes the infectious process remains severe but localizing while a fair night yields lower fever and gradual improvement. Palace hopes prince arrives next week.
The county board reappointed Norton as farm manager and attendant at the county home and Mrs Norton as matron of the home. Mrs R Miller was reappointed overseer of the poor for Washington County and township, with William Sickles as custodian of the courthouse. The board ratified Miss Ethel Grecian as county treasurer for assistants in her office. Mildred Patterson, working in the office for several months, became deputy auditor and Walter Schroeder was named clerk in the office.
The Y's Men’s era will again sponsor a Good Fellows effort to aid Washington families. A coupon will print daily on the Journal front page starting tomorrow. Readers should fill and return coupons to show how they can help with money or food, not clothing, and donations may be left in small banks at restaurants, banks, and grocery stores.
Mrs Ballo Rice, chairman of the Christmas Seals committee, announced the sale opens Friday. A committee of Legion Auxiliary members will canvass business men in the morning and schoolchildren will visit district residences.
Theodore Cassel recently enrolled in the business college at Chillicothe Missouri was kicked in the stomach by a horse. An operation was necessary this morning. Mrs Cassel and daughter Dorothy have gone to Chillicothe.
Thirty three declaimers compete at Washington High School with 33 entrants in an oratorical contest and dramatic division. Judges from near and far will select the best entries for the final stage. An admission of fifteen cents is charged to spectators.
Birdie Hotle daughter of Mr and Mrs Jacob Hotle suffered a head injury when two cars collided about two miles north of Washington last evening. Ed K Lou and Jim Hotle drove the other cars. Miss Hotle was taken to hospital and later returned home at 601 West Main Street where she is recovering.
Wichita and nearby countryside awake to a rush of oil excitement with three wells near the city yielding 10,000 barrels daily and more drillers close to pay sand at several locations. Royalty seekers and producers converge on Sedgwick County farms while farmers hear of vast fortunes from oil.
Judge Frank Bechly of Montcalm adjourned the November term of district court which began November 6. The next term opens January 8 with Judge J G Patton of Oskaloosa presiding. The court granted foreclosure in People's Savings Bank of Crawfordsville vs Waldo Wells et al and noted several guardianship and divorce actions including Fetters vs Fetters and Good vs Jacob.
Fire swept through Shenandoah auto rows causing damage estimated at 50000 dollars. Four autos were destroyed or damaged as flames spread from the Buttek motor company plant to Ahleeren's used car operation Shenandoah Tire company Chevrolet Motor Company and Swift Produce building. Radio appeal for aid was broadcast at midnight.
An explosion in the Kill-all Disinfecting plant on the upper east side demolished three buildings, killing at least four people and injuring several others. Police reported bodies recovered and many missing as debris trapped workers and bystanders. rescue hampered by gas and intense heat.
L. F. Wilson and Nick Roth, formerly with White Yard, will operate a general contracting firm from the Foss garage and proceed with building Clara ton Court on Clara Barton street. Two cottages are underway this winter with three more planned, each five rooms modern homes with garages. They also handle wrecking the Second United Presbyterian church and erecting a Mid-Continental bus station on the site, and recently finished a residence for John Birka and remodeled Dr. McIntosh’s house in Wellman.
In Chicago at the International Livestock Exposition, three University of Nebraska coeds Miss Louise Genung Miss Marjory Thompson and Miss Winifred Powell led their team to victory with 2212 points of 2700. Their triumph earns a scholarship and a chance to place the trophy in permanent possession after a third win. The men’s teams from Kansas Ohio Illinois Iowa South Dakota Mississippi Oklahoma and Pennsylvania followed in rank.
The regular meeting of the Bus iness and Professional Women's club last night in the community room of the wag special Y. W. club room featured pledges and reports. Members and officers including Mr and Mrs Lotch Sonte, Y Macson, Fona Clemens, Mrs Besse Plums, and the finance committee discussed funds, a new fundraiser, and planned a financial Christmas party with a pledged total of 265 pounds and a forthcoming report on end totals.
A report by University of Iowa President Walter A. Josnn notes an increase of 827 students. It shows the educational plant value climbing from 8,440,227 to 16,003,129 over the five year period, detailing assets and growth at Iowa City campus.
