Washington High School presents a Thursday 8 pm concert in the high school gym led by Director Alan Bergstrom. The program features the 94 piece concert band, a 16 piece stage band, nine flutists, and many named soloists and sections including Sharon Lowry and Weldell McConnell among others.
The Kennedy administration aims to avoid mobilizing Army reservists in future crises and prefers a standing force of 16 divisions. Army Secretary Elvis Stahr says morale among mobilized reservists is high and a future buildup may not be needed if active forces remain at a higher level.
The city decoration committee began renewing holiday displays in the business district aiming to make Washington the best decorated city in Southeast Iowa. Despite much voluntary labor and donated equipment, installation costs rose, prompting a call for voluntary contributions to cover expenses. Donations may be sent to the decorating committee c/o the Washington Chamber of Commerce.
The CDC reports no epidemic or outbreak of Asian flu in the United States and no flu shot shortage. West Coast illnesses were not confirmed as influenza, with only Miami showing two isolated flu cases. The agency warns conditions may rise this winter but current evidence shows no epidemic.
Keota resident John Alexander Greiner, 24, is jailed in Sigourney on a larceny charge with $2,000 bond. He was captured Nov. 30 after a string of thefts in the Keota area, and Washington County sheriffs have him wanted on related larceny charges. Deputy Keith Bryant estimated total thefts tied to Greiner at 15 to 20.
St James Church announces Friday December 8 is the Feast of the Immaculate Conception and a Holy Day of Obligation. Masses are set for 6 7 30 and 9 am with confessions Thursday 3 30 to 5 pm and 7 to 9 pm. Thursday is a fast and abstinence day but Friday abstinence is dispensed due to the Feast.
United Nations troops fought Katangese forces through Elisabethville and surrounding streets after a two month cease fire collapsed. Reports said 36 Katangese troops died, with U.N. jet support and reinforcements deployed. American and British consuls offered mediation as fighting intensified near the airport and city buildings.
A Washington resident, George R.K. Lough, was arrested for presenting a worthless $10 check at Montgomery Ward. He appeared in mayor's court and received a 10 day jail sentence. American Legion members will meet at 6:30 pm today for a chili supper and monthly meeting at City Hall Lewton rooms with pictures and a travel talk.
In Santo Domingo the anti-government general strike enters its second week as Balaguer proposes a council of state with opposition members. Seven injured include an American photographer in clashes sparked by a mob aided by troops. Officials threaten to fire workers not reporting to duty.
Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru told parliament Communist China has threatened to march into Indian territory unless border activities halt. He said India will resist and repeal any aggression, noting a Note of Oct 31 and China's request to discuss the 1954 trade treaty on Tibet. He defended Tibet policy as necessary and warned of ongoing incursions since 1959.
Walter Bender, 54, a former Kalona resident, died Monday evening in Ft. Madison after a brief illness. Born February 3, 1908 in Harper Kansas, he moved to Iowa in 1909. Survived by three brothers John Washington Ira Sam and one sister Martha Helfrich. Funeral Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Sunny side Conservative Mennonite Church with Morris Swartzendruber in charge. Burial East Union Cemetery. Body at Yoder Funeral Home Kalona until service.
Homer Tschantz 71 was found dead in his Wayland home about 1/2 mile north of town by Joe Stauffer who came to pick corn. He lived alone, never married, son of Anna Boshart and Peter Tschantz, brother of Andy Ted and Vernon Tschantz and Mrs Clara Stutzman. Funeral arrangements are with Zehr Funeral Home. death details pending.
The Izaak Walton chapter in Washington County has a few tickets left for its annual wild game dinner to be served Thursday at 6 30 pm at the Washington YMCA. Buffalo will be the main dish and the public is invited. Tickets are sold at Kneen's TV and Appliance Store or through Waltonian members.
Washington Republican Keith Vetter today asked Secretary of State Melvin Lynhorst for nomination papers for state representative from Washington County. He aims to succeed Richard Stephens, Ainsworth Republican, who has also requested nomination papers for state senator from the 1st district.
A Lime Springs woman Virgil Lewis, 47, was killed when her car collided head on with a school bus near Saratoga Iowa. About 30 children aboard the bus suffered minor injuries with roughly five treated for cuts and bruises. Bus driver Floyd Moses of Riceville was shaken but unhurt. Authorities said Lewis braked suddenly on approaching the bus after cresting a hill.
Adlai E. Stevenson announced he will not run for the U.S. Senate next year and will remain chairman of the American delegation to the United Nations. He dispelled rumors that he would oppose Everett Dirksen of Illinois in the November election.
Graveside rites were held at 3 pm for the infant daughter of Mr and Mrs Rollo Crawford of Washington. The Rev Vernon Elgin led the service with Jones Funeral Home arranging. Survivors include parents a brother and sister and maternal grandfather and aunt all of Washington.
United Press International reports Iowa will see warmer readings in the west and north central tonight and on Wednesday. Lows will be in the 20s with highs on Wednesday in the 50s in the northwest and 40s in the southeast. Thursday outlook is partly cloudy and colder.
