The Hawkeye Colt Stakes Association held its annual meeting and officer elections in the local YMCA community room with about 180 attendees for the banquet. Officers were re-elected: Kermit Hinshaw as president, LC Julius as vice president, and Mrs Keith Carey as secretary-treasurer. trophies for top point earners in two year old trotters and pacers and three year olds were awarded, and a film on the Hambletonian highlighted trotting history.

Ainsworth Farmer Loses Arm in Farm Mishap
Robert Greene of Ainsworth, a noted swine producer with State Representative Richard Stephens, was injured when a door fell into metal unloading beaters at his farm three miles east of Ainsworth. He had his left arm amputated at Burlington Mercy Hospital. His wife Connie Greene had just earned a blue ribbon at the Chicago livestock show.

Christmas Concert Draws Large Washington Crowd
Several hundred attended the annual Christmas Program by Washington Protestant choirs in the high school gym. The 100 voice choir performed multiple selections ending with Handel Hallelujah Chorus. Fog Shrouded Iowa Roads Claim Six Lives This Weekend
Six people were killed in two fog bound Iowa crashes Saturday night raising the weekend toll to six and the year count to 587. Victims included Cecil Overbaugh and Tena Lamont of Mechanicsville in a Cedar County head on collision and Clifford Truex with Mary Lou Truex near Track. A Sioux City crash killed Alexandria Jackson and left Ollie Yakusen injured. A Davenport hit and run killed Orville Dooley with Ford Becker jailed on a manslaughter charge. Janet Scofield died in Cedar Rapids when her car struck a semi truck.

Kennedy extends U S ban on Cuban sugar six months
President Kennedy extends the ban on Cuban sugar imports through June 30 next year in the national interest. The move deprives Castro of an estimated 8 million dollars in trade while Cuba seeks barter deals with Communist bloc countries for nearly five million tons annually over four years. Analysts say U S prices remain largely unaffected and the sugar act allows reallocation of quotas to other nations if needed.

Mennonites Can 20000 Cans for World Relief Drive
Nine Mennonite and Amish churches from Kalona and Wayland area canned and shipped over 20000 cans of cooked beef and pork for relief work worldwide. About 500 volunteers worked 10 days at a Kalona area canning house, with meat donated by church members. The project supports Mennonite Central Committee relief efforts and marks an annual effort alongside August canning sessions for Midwestern mission work.
