In Lake Success New York the United States and five other nations presented a formal charge to the UN General Assembly that Chinese communist troops are fighting the United Nations in Korea. The six nation memo urged adding King’s open intervention in Korea to the agenda and was described as mild.
At a Junior Chamber of Commerce meeting the club decided to sponsor a home Christmas decoration contest with an entry blank to be printed in the Journal. Decorations with a Christmas theme qualify. Prizes of 25, 15, and 10 dollars will be awarded. Willard DeLashmust spoke on county welfare work. Plans include two lighted trees at Washington edges and a Legion rooms Christmas Ball on Friday December 9.
The Farm Bureau women's committee met to outline the January and February extension program. Township lampshade chairmen will meet December 7 at 10 a.m. to assist groups in their townships. Ruth Foster and Tom Robb will present a health oriented program for farmers and homemakers in January.

Reports from Russia indicate a power fight after Josef Stalin’s death. Two factions vie for influence: Lavrenti Beria’s Secret Police and Marshal Nicolai Bulganin’s Red Army. Molotov seen as possible successor, but any move could topple him. Widespread discontent may trigger civil strife amid social and economic inequities. War veterans oppose the Secret Police who stayed away during the war. International note.
The Iowa Veterans Administration ordered a second round of job cuts, totaling 45 administrative positions at the Des Moines VA Center to take effect December 31. No hospital staff or Knoxville and Clinton facilities are affected.
Senator Eugene Millikin, Colorado, says the 5.1 billion civil defense bill is too controversial for a lame duck session but could receive temporary support. Hearings open as a House panel examines sweeping powers for funding, civilian control, and interstate and international civil defense compacts.
Chamber of Commerce Secretary Lester Hamil announced that the Thursday chamber meeting will end in time for members to attend the first Community Forum lecture at the high school. He urged attendance at the dinner meeting as the annual election for board of directors is scheduled and will occur after the dinner.
Jennie S. Strum, 69, longtime Washington resident, died Monday night at McClintic Nursing Home in Wayland where she had resided since August 1 193. Born November 2 1881 in Kalmar Sweden she moved to the United States at five months old. Survived by brother A R Strum of Washington sister Mrs Himmelrich of Washington four nephews and one niece. Funeral Thursday December 7 at Jones funeral home with Rev W J Stevens. Burial Elm Grove Cemetery.
Special services at the Metho dist church will be held tonight Wednesday and Thursday evenings starting at 7 30 oclock.
Funeral services were held at 10 oclock Tuesday at the Methodist church with Dr Raymond Reed in charge. Burial followed in Woodlawn cemetery. John Yousling played the organ. pallbearers were Cloud Willits, R. E. Brown, C. C. Wilson, Dr B. E. Stutsman, C. V. Cruit and Sam Turkington.

At 10 50 today a collision occurred at the intersection of West Third and North Avenue b. Earl G Gallo Way route 3 Washington drove a car that struck a truck driven by Ronald K E Jackson Washington City police cite slippery streets as the cause. Neither driver was injured. The truck suffered 75 damage to the right side and door while the car had 250 damage to its hood front end and front doors.

Glen Hall was named president of the Christian church men's brotherhood at the annual election held Monday night after dinner at the church. Carl Dallmeyer was named vice president and Delbert Zager secretary-treasurer. John Lee shared his World War II China experiences during the program.
Senate leaders reported that Gen. Omar N. Bradley told the foreign relations panel that American troops in Korea have reached a position from which they could be evacuated if needed. He warned that Chinese pressure could force UN withdrawal, but aides stressed no Dunkirk style operation is imminent and a reversal by Gen. MacArthur’s forces remains possible.
Eddy Howard and his orchestra will appear at the Washington armory on December 11 under joint sponsorship of the National Guard battery led by Capt Harold Stephens and the Ordance Reserve Company led by Capt Bill Paddock. The one night stand features listening chairs and floor space for dancing with admission at 2.25 dollars per person. Two beer license applications were presented at the city council meeting on Monday evening. John Simmering seeks a permit for the Candy Kitchen and Joe Simmering requests renewal. Action to be determined later. Representatives urged denial for any licenses on East Washington Street. no decision was made.
Eight parcels were sold for delinquent taxes at the courthouse sale on Monday. Five went to individuals for a total of $18.60 while the remainder were bid in by the county as required by law. County Treasurer W. E. Howell called it the smallest such sale since his tenure. In 1935, 236 parcels were sold at the December 2 sale.
Weather outlook shows a cold wave in Des Moines with snow flurries in the west and diminishing snow in the east this afternoon. Northwest winds 20 to 30 mph cause drifting, clearing tonight and by Wednesday morning, with temperatures around 10 to 15 below zero in places and highs near 0 to 10 above.
