Iowa Governor and officials request a special appropriation of 2.513 million for state parks and a 50 percent budget boost for two years. The plan backs capital improvements across parks, forests, waters, artificial lake development, erosion control, and land acquisitions, to complete long delayed projects.
Secretary of State James Byrnes said the United States seeks the early repatriation of about 764000 German prisoners held by France Belgium the Netherlands and Luxembourg who were transferred to those allies by American forces. France has not formally replied while Belgium the Netherlands and Luxembourg express readiness.
Washington public library hosts its first children’s story hour in 16 years on Saturday December 7 at 10 30 a m for first and second graders. The program features Christmas stories and records and aims to spark literary interest and library use under Washington high school speech class guidance by Mrs. Wurt.
This month is for chauffeur license renewals but only a few have paid the two dollar fee and received new licenses. Renewals are handled by the license examiner at the courthouse. This forenoon only 15 renewals were granted and all renewals must be completed before January 1.
The Oliver Corporation in Charles City plans a temporary shutdown affecting about 1,700 workers due to the coal embargo and freight strike. Production cuts spread to Decorah and other Iowa centers with layoffs and curtailments cited, as fuel shortages bite industry statewide.
Jim Turner a noted Washington trapper captured an adult badger weighing about 20 pounds in a steel mink trap on the Dave Mel Laughlin farm southwest of town. He believes other badgers may be in the area and ties the sighting and chicken thefts last fall to the same creature that frightened residents with odd nocturnal noises.
Affidavits of expenses connected with the November 5 election have been filed by county candidates. W. E. Howell, reelected county treasurer, spent 15.10 on campaign items. Robert Welte, supervisor, paid 15.40 for newspaper advertising. Harriet Coulter, reelected county recorder, spent 12.85 for committee assessment and ads. R. R. Noonan, reelected clerk of court, filed 20.85 for committee contribution and advertisements.
Rita M. Cloose seeks a decree of separate maintenance from Nick Cloese in Pengilly Minnesota. She claims marriage on August 4 1940 in Bemidji and cohabitation until November 28 1946 with three children. City liaison lists custody, real estate ward, Dodge coupe, and alimony along with an injunction restricting entry to Riverside home. Swisher Swisher of Iowa City represents the plaintiff.
The conservation department cautions that a single match can ruin vast forests while urging outdoorsmen to report fires. Officials note the temporary plant closure is due to freight embargo rather than coal shortages, affecting operations.
Des Moines report shows Iowa will serve more than 16 million lunches to elementary and high school pupils by year end, up about 3 million from last year. About 1983 public schools participate, with federal funding covering nine cents per complete lunch and six cents for incomplete lunches, plus two cents per half-pint of milk.
The Iowa State Guard headquarters company at the armory plans winter entertainment and diversion beyond drills. Recent activities include a feed after Monday drills and a night at the picture show with more feeds planned. Rifle shooting contests will be held regularly. the unit lists 40 to 50 men and seeks new enlistments.

Rev L Malmin of Nevada preaches and sings during a week long evangelistic series at the Christian Tabernacle. Evening services continue daily including Saturday at 7 30 with Malmin delivering sermons and musical portions.
Rev Earl Dale 91 iorm Lake preaches nightly at the New Haven church west of Washington. Services run 7 20 pm every night until Dec 15 except Saturdays. Friday is young adult night with potluck at 1 30 pm and Grace Hill choir in concert. Sermon Friday is The Wages of Sin.
Calcutta reports rioting during the Moslem Molhiwrrum festival. Soldiers fired to break up clashes in Sealdah injuring about 56 people. British and Indian troops reinforced to restore order as tension rises. Reports also mention deaths and injuries in Dacca district, East Bengal.
Judge Frank Beehly heard evidence and arguments in the Milton Birka and Carl Schrag suit involving a landlord and tenant dispute. Swisher & Swisher of Iowa City represent the plaintiff, while John C. Owen of Washington represents the defendant.
Des Moines reports three new Veterans of Foreign Wars posts announced by state commander Dr John 38 McVitty. New posts planned for Anita today Marengo tomorrow and Brooklyn December 9. The expansion raises Iowa VFW posts to twenty percent of the state total.
Jack Pauls son of Mr and Mrs George Pauls and student at the Great Lakes naval academy was named honor man in a 130 member company and scored the highest on the recruit final achievement test with 182 correct of 187 questions. He is home on a twelve day furlough and will return to his duties next week.
A mass AFL union strike in Alameda county ended at 11 10 a m PST after officials and employers agreed to call workers back if police did not escort strike breakers. The 54 hour walkout disrupted services in six cities involving over a million residents.
A consulting engineer for the Interior Department said natural gas will begin pouring into the big inch pipelines by tonight but will not reach consumers for five days or more. Max W. Ball noted the speed to customers depends on water in the lines as the temporary lease of pipelines to Tennessee Gas and Transmission Co is handled. He added gas moves through lines at about the pace a man walks, delaying Ohio delivery by at least five days.
John L. Lewis homestead at Springfield uses gas heating installed in June 1945. The United Mine Workers leader owns the house occupied by his 85 year old mother, Mrs. Ann Louisa Lewis, ensuring warmth during the coal strike.
The Homestead mine located in Lead South Dakota is described as the largest gold mine in North America.
President Truman will broadcast to the nation at 9 30 p m to urge miners to return to work if the soft coal strike has not ended by then. The government says the 15 day shutdown has brought the nation to the brink of economic paralysis and threatens winter hardship while urging governors to conserve coal immediately. The president’s move follows court actions against the United Mine Workers and John L Lewis with appeals planned to the Supreme Court.
