A column reports gold assays on the A. M Houser farm ten acres of sand and gravel one mile east of Centerville. Surface sand yields $3.50 per ton while at 65 feet depth gold reaches $7 per ton. The deposit is free gold and workable by panning as in the California gold rush.
A. D. Ditz of Des Moines received a ticket for passing a stop sign in Ottumwa. He phoned Justice H. D. Judd to avoid returning for the minor traffic violation, then mailed $3 and the ticket by registered mail per Judd's directions.
LeMars report says a Northwestern passenger train rammed a car at a grade crossing, nearly dividing it in half. Mr and Mrs Nick Wiltgen, a farming couple, escaped with minor injuries and are expected to recover.
Police investigate after Tasty Lunch proprietor finds Hart Bedel with a fractured skull in the lunchroom. Bedel is in serious condition. authorities believe an intruder may have attacked him before he arrived for work.
Fort Dodge farmer Harvey Scheerer hosted his daily cattle sale lunch by inviting the public. A herd of forty Kiwanis members, prompted by an advertisement, arrived at noon and held their luncheon at the farm, rather than the usual hotel gathering.
Cletus Septer has logged 3500 miles in 1935 on a bicycle journey in Marengo with 8500 miles already counted for the year and an aim of ten miles per day. He took part in the coast-to-coast relay that helped break the transcontinental record in the summer.
Etta Raymond left the University of Iowa in June 1865 with an academic degree and is now Mrs Kersey O. Holmes, the university’s oldest graduate by one year. Mary Howe of Carpentaria California and W. W. Baldwin of Chicago, both class of 1866, rank next in official alumni records.
The first water pumping engine in Iowa City will be taken out of service this week after operating since 1882. A single gear driven unit will be replaced by a gasoline driven centrifugal pump, with the pumping station remodeled to accommodate the new equipment after removing the old Holly pump.
A divorce decree was filed this week in the district court in the case Hazel J. Boughton versus L. M. Boughton. Judge J. G. Patterson granted the divorce.
Des Moines reports WPA funds fully allocated to 898 projects across eight Iowa counties, employing 36,349 certified jobless. Eleven new projects announced include Riverside street grading in Washington County with ten workers and $950 allocated from a total $6,231,000 statewide.
Foreign Secretary Samuel Hoare told the House of Commons Britain is ready to join an oil embargo against Italy and sees little gain in resuming armament reduction talks while the Ethiopian war continues. Paris experts outline a peaceful settlement proposal to be sent to Mussolini next week. Rome officials say Italy sees no optimistic path to settlement.
The county agent reports the first 1946 federal corn loan was issued within four hours of form receipt. Sealer Howard M. Stewart and Wyater R. Brown inspected and sealed the corn in Crawfordsville. Eligible cribs must guarantee No. 3 grade when shelled next July.

Santa Claus left Washington with his camel paniies dogs and companions to entertain children in Chariton tomorrow. Children gathered joyfully as the caravan departed after a visit with Washington county children.
The first practical move toward around the world air service was expected from an international conference in Washington begun today on transatlantic air mail. Attending are representatives of Great Britain and other nations.
R. D. Van Dorin was reappointed county home steward and Mrs. Van Dorin county home matron by the Washington county board of supervisors for the next year. Will Sickles was reappointed as courthouse janitor. H. G. McBride and Bob Welte named to operate county road machinery. Further appointments expected at January meeting.
The Washington County Poultry Breeders association announces its first annual banquet at the Congress hotel at 6 30 Friday night. Mrs Tom Gerdes is chairwoman with Harry Ramseyer and Mrs Joe Wolfe coordinating. Reservations through Ramseyer due by Friday morning. Tickets 50 cents. A surprise program is in the works. The group, two years old, counts about 40 members. Fred Wagner serves as president. The organization recently sponsored a show at the city hall. Ivan Schmidt of Oxford Iowa and Lucille Schmidt of North Liberty Iowa secured a marriage license here yesterday. Ireland Canada and Newfoundland. The British group arrived from Ottawa backing a North Atlantic air mail route to Europe. The push for an Atlantic airline follows recent transpacific service.
Sioux City December 5. Trial testimony cites 68 local and eight long distance calls including a call to Walter Maley at Des Moines and five long distance calls to Frank Brishots. Fonda operator Cornish Peck testified O Connor allegedly pressed withdrawal of state agents to aid gamblers.
The December meeting of the Washington Chamber of Commerce will be held at 6 30 this evening at the Congress hotel. Tickets are selling fast as a large crowd is expected. Store owners and managers have arranged for sales staff to attend the talk on salesmanship by A L Taylor secretary of the Cedar Rapids Chamber of Commerce.
Pat's Blue Ribbon, the grand champion steer at the International Live Stock Show in Chicago, sold for 3 a pound netting 3 150 for owner Cleo Yoder of Wellman Iowa. The 1 050 pound steer was bought by the Nathan Schweitzer company of New York. Proceeds will partly fund Yoder's college plans at Iowa State College Ames.
The Washington county hospital shows a busier year with 909 patients up from 707, 119 births including 5 boys and 61 girls, and 282 operations up from 263. Deaths totaled 31 and daily patient average was 15.4. Expenses 31,050.64, earnings 39,309.63, receipts 17,659.70.
About 150 school leaders from southeast Iowa gathered at the Y M C A to discuss increasing state participation in school funding to reduce local property taxes. Dr E B Peterson urged shifting tax support from property to other state sources, noting schools rely 96 percent on property taxes and only 27 percent of the tax dollar funds schools.
A church notice states a service will be held at the Four Square Tabernacle tonight instead of Friday night. The change shifts local worship hours and attendance plans for congregants.

An informal exchange of ideas for Christian Education officials drew 39 participants from eight counties Iowa Henry Louisa Muscatine Jefferson Keokuk Johnson and Washington. Walter Hutton led the session at 9 30 a m with lunch taken in the church basement. Plans were made for a similar meeting next year and Mrs Peter Mazzel spoke on Sunday school work in her current community.
Mrs Edith Prizen Griffith of Brighton recalls the assassination of Abraham Lincoln and the Civil War celebration when Northern troops emerged victorious. She notes loyal Unionists lit their homes with candles as a salute to the soldiers.
