Fire on Broadway between Murray and Warren streets destroys the Rogers Peet & Co. building and threatens the Home Life Insurance and Postal Telegraph structures. Firefighters bag water supply difficulties as crews fight flames from the rooftops to halt spread.
Six bodies of Portland wreck victims were brought to the morgue from Orleans with three identified: Fred A. Brown of Portland, a man named Allen of Philadelphia, and Eva M. Totten of Portland. The life preservers allegedly contained a sinking substance weighing wearers like lead.
Fog caused a rear end collision of two sections of Baltimore and Ohio freight train No. 98 eleven and a half miles west of Walkerton Indiana. Injured were Hayes engineer Baum fireman Hammers conductor Thomas brakeman Hughes Cooper Brown. Conductor Thomas injured internally and may die. Both engines severely damaged and three passenger coaches plus two cabooses destroyed.
Joliet Illinois December 5 The Great Western tin plate mill destroyed by fire two months ago is being rebuilt and should be operating by New Year. The mill’s size and strong post fire offers attracted attention with Chicago Heights making a notable bid to win the prize. the firm already has ample orders on hand. In Cleveland Ohio December 5 Michael Voelkner of Rothport wounded and his son Henry 19 shot him during a family dispute. the son was not indicted while the father faces assault with intent to kill charges.
Mrs. Sarah Schenkenberger was found guilty by a jury of poisoning her daughter-in-law and was sentenced to life imprisonment. The victim, from a prominent Frankfort family, died after arsenic was found in her stomach. The case notes elopement and residence in several cities before returning to Frankfort.
American forces officially hoisted the stars and stripes over Sancti Spiritus and Trinidad in Santa Clara province during ceremonies after taking charge of the cities.
Washington. The Fifty fifth Congress closes its first session amid focus on war era issues and regular budgets. Vatick Hayes of Lockport was found to be James Clancy a drunken prisoner in Joliet. He was to wed Miss Mary Cunningham of Ottawa on Thanksgiving Day. the match was postponed when he vanished.
