Sioux City column reports Mrs. Alice E Bridges marks her tenth wedding anniversary by suing Edmond L Bridges for divorce on grounds of alleged inhumane treatment. The personal dispute is framed as a public local reflection on marriage.
Mystic youth Roy Davis escaped serious injury when a bullet fired by a hunting companion glanced off his side without piercing a rib. He is resting well and owes his life to rib protection.
Linn county and Cedar Rapids officers conducted a statewide search for Jene Downs a 17 year old Cornell college co ed who left Mount Vernon. Harry A Downs of Greene requested the inquiry and Miss Downs is said to have disappeared at the interurban station in Cedar Rapids.
The Atlantic school board won authority at a special election to sell the former high school and its site. Proceeds will help finance the new $300,000 structure currently under way.
In Des Moines Rev. Wadding burned $21,000 in cancelled bonds of the Park Avenue Presbyterian Church as part of a fire. The church had burned last year, and with interior remodeling ongoing, $11,000 of indebtedness remains for a future bond fire.
J Forrest Embree of Sigourney was re elected head of the Iowa county officers association southeast district for 1937 at the annual election. Other officers are A R Wray of Davis county vice president and F P G Halbfass of Muscatine county secretary treasurer. The southeast Iowa district includes seventeen counties.
Des Moines assistant attorney general Leon P. Ryan said the state would appeal to the U S Supreme Court regarding a federal injunction stopping the collection of a premium tax from Modern Woodmen of America and Woodmen of the World. The three judge court granted the injunction.
In Jefferson a 65-year-old man saved his 50-year-old companion James Cuddy from the Racoon River after their car stalled on a hill, rolled backward over a 12-foot embankment, and plunged into the water. The rescuer sustained a broken arm but dragged Cuddy from the six-foot-deep icy water.
At the Iowa City fieldhouse a Holstein Guernsey and Jersey exhibit refused tap water during the auto show and home appliance display. Exhibitors then brought 196 gallons of well water to the farms and all cows drank from it without hesitation.
Miss Martha Gities of Washington High School learned of her mother’s death in Jerome this Wednesday. Sidles, away since Thanksgiving due to illness, will resume teaching next Monday.
Nearly 400 children are listed for the Christmas parade set for Saturday at 10 o clock. Mayor Lytle and the city police urge safety and no sidewalk parking around the square. The parade ends at the State Theater where prizes are awarded and a movie is shown for the youngsters, with Santa and music featured at Washington tomorrow.
The county reports a total Red Cross membership of 905 with Riverside pending. Irene Yard led the drive under county chair Roger Sherman, aided by many volunteers. Key towns include Kalona 75, Brighton 60, Wellman 40, Crawfordsville 37, Rubio 37, Richmond 20, Ainsworth 27, West Chester 2, Haskins 9, Living Lake 18, Prairie Flower 6.

H. J. Walker led the United Presbyterian church guest night as part of the preaching mission series. Delegations from town churches attended, with Rev. W. J. Stevens and Rev. Vernon Carter aiding. Ruth Stewart sang The Ninety and Nine as the choir performed two selections. A Bible school program followed with Mrs. P. P. Whisler in charge.
Davenport officials abandon an intercepting sewer project funded by a 356490 WPA grant, after earlier approval of 456000 in city funds. Voters rejected a 3 million purchase of Davenport’s water works, prompting the reversal.
Washington Goodfellows begin daily coupon draw in the Journal to fund a Christmas dinner for needy families and children. The Y's Men’s Club sponsors the effort with volunteers delivering baskets and urging early contributions.
Madrid reports that rebel radio stations claim three Soviet steamers jammed with war material were captured by rebel warfare units while loyalist broadcasts report victories. Rebels also claim a British steamer carrying 100 artillery guns and munitions was captured. Government communique from Valencia notes continued loyalist progress in northwestern Madrid after four weeks of fighting.
George L. McDaniel Harry Ramseyer and Stanley McKeown were elected to the Washington Chamber of Commerce board at the December meeting held at the Congress hotel. Holdovers include Bob Lytle L. C. Wil and John Winga with officers Frank B. Miller A B E Atchison Clarence Logan Harry Sizer to serve the new year. The group also discussed plans for Christmas observance led by Lewis Warren with Joe Falk and Stanley McKeown as members.
Harry Crone was elected commander of Albert M. Huff camp of Spanish-American War Veterans at the annual election after an oyster supper at the Congress hotel. Other officers named include Lon Beltel as vice commander Walter Crawford as quartermaster John Jones as adjutant Harvey Barnes as chaplain Dr W B Crooks as surgeon Melo Kos officer of the day Frank Gray officer of the guard C C Wilson D W Harvey and C A Neiswanger as trustees. Nearly all members living in the county attended.
Washington county Democrats reported expenditures of $337.91 for the campaign, far less than Republicans who listed $956. Dr. O. F. Soller filed the report with the county auditor, with Democrats contributing $85 to state organization and Republicans $500. Receipts totaled $376.84 leaving $38.93 in the treasury as campaign activities covered advertising, headquarters, rentals, typing, signs, postage and other routine costs.
With 41.44 on hand and miscellaneous contributions reported as precinct totals, few gifts listed range from one to ten dollars. The expense statement was filed yesterday, the final day for filing financial statements of candidates and party organizations.
DES MOINES J C Lewis state labor federation president pleaded innocent in municipal court to failure to aid the injured and leaving the scene after a collision. Judge Moore set a Dec 18 hearing and released him on a $500 bond.
London reports Baldwin rejects morganatic marriage with Wallis Simpson. Crowds cheer the king at Buckingham Palace as Mrs Simpson seeks refuge in France. Reuter notes she reaches the French coast en route to villas near Paris, with possible stays at Trianon and Cannes.
Prime Minister Stanley Baldwin declared to the House of Commons that Britain’s constitutional law prevents the king from marrying a person of inferior rank and that the resulting queen would hold full royal rights. He said the government will not change the legal status or pass new legislation regarding the marriage crisis involving Mrs Wallis Warfield Simpson.
Ed Haney a 49 year old Cedar Rapids salesman died from injuries after a Tuesday automobile crash near Lone Tree Iowa. The inquest was set by Coroner George Maresh with witnesses Gerald Welte and Jack Norton traveling to Iowa City to testify. Also noted is Iowa’s mobile death toll reaching 488 with two additional fatalities from Urbana Iowa and Eagleville Missouri in separate late night crashes near Lamoni.
