Chicago December coroner's jury freed Estelle Stout who shot Henry M. Hornberger after a quarrel over an enlarged framed picture of a dead relative. The case highlighted a nationwide practice of reproducing dead portraits for frames at high cost and threats to withhold originals.

In Omaha the Davis trial for Dr Frederick Rustin’s murder expands as Mrs Abbie B Rice takes the stand detailing a conversation in which Rustin allegedly told Davis he planned to have Rice shoot him then she would kill herself to allow his family to claim insurance. Rice says she could not carry out the plan.
New York December 4. In the government suit to dissolve the Standard Oil trust, John D. Archbold testifies about loans totaling 22 million dollars to P S Trainer. Kellogg pursues every lead while Archbold says he sees no reason for the loans and Trainer directs the pipeline system. The testimony triggers amusement as Archbold notes possible rate discrepancies between railroad men and shippers.
Police believe a mailed letter from a woman with a physician signed note caused Boas’s death. The letter urged the recipient to take two powders as an indigestion remedy, sent by special delivery to Boas, a salesman for an electric company.
Deposed Haitian President Nord Alexis fled Port au Prince as mobs looted shops and homes. Police balked. General Poidevin armed citizens and troops to quell violence, eight rioters killed, Simon's forces near the city, and Alexis pondered exile to Jamaica St Thomas or Martinique.
