A Waterloo man is hospitalized with a facial bullet wound believed to be from a Monday night shooting at a Waterloo motel. Police have not questioned Robert Lee Allen, and a warrant for aggravated assault is pending. Eye injury may cause loss of sight in his right eye.
Washington analysis explains how the birthday lottery affects draft eligibility for those born 1944 to 1950. It divides birthdays into three groups: early numbers 1 through 122 face likely induction in 1970, 123 through 244 face possible notice, and 245 through 366 have low chance of service. L Cpl Stephen Arnold Morrison 22 son of Mr and Mrs James Morrison of 717 South Seventh Avenue Washington was killed instantly in an auto crash on Highway 92 near the east edge of Washington Monday night. He had just returned from Vietnam on furlough and was to report to Camp Lejeune December 8. A passenger in the Miller car, John Edward Shafer, 529 South Avenue D, is in Washington County Hospital with neck injuries. another passenger was uninjured. Miller, 22, of 9051 West Monroe, Washington, escaped unharmed. McCarthy and brother in the pickup were unhurt. Funeral services are pending. burial in Elm Grove Cemetery. Morrison leaves eight siblings and his parents.
President Nixon addressed the White House Conference on Food, Nutrition and Health calling for a determined campaign against poverty’s hunger. He urged public support for pending domestic legislation including a guaranteed basic income for every American family and urged reform of the welfare system as a national priority while acknowledging diverse opinions at the three day Sheraton Park Hotel gathering.
The first Selective Service lottery in nearly three decades listed birth dates 1 through 10 drawn Monday night to rank induction for 1970 draftees. Birth dates include Sept 14 and others, with numbers determining who is called first while those with later dates face possible exemption or deferred status until their numbers are drawn.
Washington city councilmen approved gradual pay increases for both councilmen and the mayor. From January 1, 1972 councilmen will be paid ten dollars per meeting and the mayor’s salary will rise to two hundred dollars per month starting January 1, 1970. The council also backed the road use tax budget, renewed a VFW club liquor permit, and hired Lewis Graf accounting of Fairfield for the annual city audit.
United Press International reports Iowa will see fair skies and cooler conditions tonight and Wednesday. Lows tonight range from the upper teens to the upper 20s in the north with warmer readings in the south. Wednesday highs reach the lower 40s in the north to the upper 40s in the southwest.
The Washington High School vocal department offers its Christmas Concert on Tuesday December 9 at 8 p.m. in the high school auditorium. The program centers on Haydn's Lord Nelson Mass performed with four University of Iowa student soloists, piano by Gray Hillman, and ensembles including the Concert Choir Mixed Chorus Sophomore Choir and Hi Fis. Additional selections feature carols arrangements by Shaw Parker Jacob Tolmage and Young with Mozart Still Still Still and In Dulce Jubilo. Accompanists Janet Miller Marsha Kron and Greg Hillman direct assisted choirs. Admission 75 cents for adults 50 cents for students.
Rep Fred Schwengel Republican Iowa says tax dollars should be used more efficiently through block grants and revenue sharing. He urges adoption of a revenue sharing bill and expansion of block grants to federal programs, arguing education now consumes over two fifths of state and local revenues and should be the primary beneficiary.
The Iowa Engineering Society denounces the Merit Employment Commission move to ease requirements for highway engineer one. The resolution, led by Kenneth J. Cullen, claims lowering to two years as an engineer in training contradicts state law and weakens standards for a profession integral to public safety.
