Nashua column notes a 900 pound bull fell through a board roof at the Tony Holm farm and had to be recovered by Roy Banwell using an auto wrecker. The incident showcases rural hazards and local ingenuity in handling farm emergencies.
E Day of Sabula was issued auto license number 491 for the eighteenth year. He has held the number since the county system began in 1922 after making application several weeks prior.
Mrs Nora Shultz 76 of Council Bluffs suffered a broken right hip after a fall on a stairway in Des Moines while visiting a real estate office on the second floor. Police said she tripped on the stairs and physicians at Broadlawns General hospital described her condition as serious.
Mrs Mamie Wedmore, 65, of near Council Bluffs died in a Bluffs hospital from a fractured skull after walking into the side of a truck as she alighted from a bus. Driver Harry Taves of Milford Neb said he saw her step off the bus and thought she saw the truck.
Three men were indicted by a federal grand jury in Des Moines for operating a cigarette theft ring. The group is charged with stealing cigars valued at 17 000 dollars from Rock Island railroad and selling them to Des Moines restaurants taverns and individuals.
A Des Moines River valley project is proposed by sponsors to back Water for recreation flood control and hydroelectric power. A dam 100 feet high would be built 24 miles north of Des Moines creating a lake about 60 miles long with a 200 mile shoreline for cottages hotels and parks.
Eight year old Roy Alitz, son of Mr and Mrs Louis H Alitz, drowned after going coasting with companions near Lyons laundry. Fireman Charles B Rose recovered the body from Wilsow creek in about seven feet of water following a brief search after the incident after school hours.
Centerville will host the first in a series titled School for Brides at the Centerville Church of Christ Friday night. A formal wedding with ring service will start the program, followed by a symposium on marriage and home religion led by Rev. H K Trimble. Dr J F Condon addresses home health, with State Senator Hugh Guernsey speaking on marriage laws.
The conservation commission holds foxes partly responsible for pheasant scarcity in the state this year. In response, hunting parties have formed in northwest counties to reduce fox numbers.
Des Moines reports Iowa state conservation commission clarifies trapping during the open fur season. Trapping is only allowed with landholder permission along about 800 miles of state owned streams, excluding refuge areas. The rule does not permit trespassing on private land to reach the state streams.
The Washington county poultry show features 439 birds, the largest ever except for two years ago, mostly raised in county. Judge Oscar Grow of Atlanta, Missouri, praises the high quality, noting White Rocks as among the best seen this year. The event includes rug and quilt displays with various patterns and entries, judged by Grace Randle at 4 PM.
Shanghai dispatch reports two Chinese bombers failed to sink a Japanese anchored ship on the Whangpoo river and attacked other Japanese warships off Woosung. Japanese planes retaliated by raiding Nanking, claiming a 30 aircraft battle with 16 shot down. Chinese resistance stiffens as reinforcements arrive and advances toward Nanking are claimed.
Frank Macon returns from Decatur Illinois to visit his sister Mrs A I Townley in Macon county hospital. He notes delayed trains and icy roads. His sister Mary E Batty 77 dies in Mott North Dakota. Funeral held Saturday. Husband died years earlier.
Sadie Henrietta Evans McCarty widow of former Washington county sheriff died at Copppock home of her daughter Mrs Gleede Dold after a Saturday stroke. Funeral Sunday at 2 pm in Shermans with Rev. Patton. burial in Hillcrest, Brighton. Survived by son Rex. daughters Mrs Phillip Bratten and Mrs Cold. six grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
Washington County Petroleum Industries committee members gathered in Washington with 29 attendees to discuss tax costs on gasoline and petroleum products. Glenn L. Wilson was elected chairman with Clarence Kloepfer as vice president and T. R. Gillespie as secretary. G. C. Lloyd of Des Moines spoke on tax justice and highway funding, stressing gasoline tax revenue should fund highway construction and maintenance.
New projection and sound equipment installed at the State theatre will be tested today and reopen tonight. The old equipment is moved to the Fox theatre where similar upgrades are planned by Ralph and Clyde Pratt. Nine workers perform final tests on the Western Electric system praised as the best yet for realism and life-like sound.
Mrs. Anna Korous, 76, of Riverside, died at Washington County Hospital after breaking her hip at her daughter’s home. Born Anna Brchacova in Bohemia, she immigrated to America, married John Vogt, then Frank Korous. Funeral plans pending. burial in Mount Olivet Cemetery. Surviving are five children, eighteen grandchildren, and eight great grandchildren.
Des Moines reports Iowa corn moisture levels two percent higher than last year’s average, indicating drier grain than the prior crop.
Judge Frank Bechly opened the beer permit hearing for Oral Mayo to sell beer at the former Joe Simmering tavern on North Iowa avenue. Dr. Fred Reid testified no moral fault in Mayo, but room conditions raised objections about toilets lighting and general suitability. proceeding to continue this afternoon. A separate note reports motion rulings in Buser vs Work, and a divorce decree for Lily Prindle from Le Roy Prince.
The state department of agriculture reports 22 samples from across Iowa show a moisture content of 16.91 percent and a weight per bushel of 55 pounds as of November 20.
Senator McNary urged sending the farm bill back to the agriculture committee after reading Secretary Wallace’s letter condemning its features. He argued the bill violates Roosevelt's farm pledge and leans toward compulsory controls, urging a slower, more careful approach. In a separate action, the House cleared a path to consider the labor standards bill on Dec. 13, curbing labor threats to the farm measure.
The Iowa Highway Commission reports district engineer J. Morrison died suddenly in his Washington office Monday at 1 30 pm. The state office is closed today in his honor and his funeral is held this afternoon in Ottumwa with Mr and Mrs Russell Frink among attendees.
The Burlington chapter hosted the southeastern district conclave of DeMolay with strong financial and social success. Washington attendees included Hilton Durst Esra Smith Lawrence Whisler Raymond Whisler Lloyd Scott John Applegate Duane Griggs Kenton Kurtz Richard Miller Wayne Knapp Everette Burham and Roy Means. Washington will host the spring conclave in May. John Applegate received a fold pin for outstanding service as district master councilor. The Washington DeMolays awarded the DeMolay degree during the afternoon session.
In St Louis on December 2 121 persons were ordered to appear in court and show cause why they should not be restrained from picketing the Ford assembly plant as part of a CIO called strike.
