Webster City column notes 18 year old Joan Wilson sustained severe burns to his leg when his overalls ignited while he worked on a car. The flame reportedly sparked as he stood near a bonfire.
Irville Mah. lsteadt, 15, of Gladbrook, died from a gunshot wound near Gladbrook while hunting with a companion. The boy had his leg amputated in an attempt to save his life.
Erikader The Clayton County Rural Carriers association and auxiliary approved a regulation granting retirement after thirty years of service.
Drake University Professor James J Fiderlick head of the drama department announced an experimental theater to give students practical experience in writing and producing original plays in Des Moines.
Fort Madison report states 12 year old Donald Thomas, son of Mr and Mrs George Thomas, died in a hospital from a bullet wound to the abdomen while he and Gordon Brown were playing with a pistol The Thomases had another son William who died three years earlier from an accidental gun shot wound
Eleven year old Sioux City resident Allen Goodman gon Paullina was struck by a bullet while walking near his home. Doctors warned he may lose an eye as they prepared to remove the bullet from his neck. Officials pursued the case though they believed the shooting could be accidental.
Marshalltown resident M A Gaunt recalls boyhood memories after finding 51 year old bruises inside a tree he cut at his father’s farm. He notes a 12 year old hailstorm struck the farm and a second storm last spring toppled another tree at the Gaunt property.
Spanish pianist and conductor Jose Iturbi will appear in the university concert course series as the second event. He has given more piano recitals in this country than most, excluding Paderewski, and has toured here since 1929. The program follows the Heifetz concert and precedes two St Louis Symphony performances.
Lee Ringling, 70, prominent circus magnate and last surviving Ringling brother, died early today after several days of illness from bronchial pneumonia. Born in MacGregor Iowa, he helped build the Ringling circus from a spinal tent show to the world’s largest, later acquiring the Barnum and Bailey shows and heading the American Circus Corporation.

Des Moines reports the State University of Iowa field house bond issue of 300000 will be paid off by the university athletic department in January. For 1936 the department paid 75000 in principal and has kept interest payments current, leaving 25000 in principal and 625 in interest. Despite a weak football season, January may see a full year’s interest paid on 480000 in stadium bonds, marking continued progress on reducing indebtedness.
Des Moines reports from the US Department of Agriculture show farmers narrowed the price gap between what they buy and what they sell. For the year ending November 15 1936 producers gained 12 points in selling prices while purchasing costs rose five points, reducing the disparity to seven points.
The J. C. Penney Co. board declares a 1.00 common stock dividend and a 3.75 extra dividend for the quarter ending December 31, 1936. Both payable December 15 to holders of record December 4. A special Christmas bonus is approved for over 25,000 associates, equal to two weeks pay for regular employees and proportionate for shorter tenures, as 1936 remuneration for loyalty and service.
A 19 month old Waterloo child Thomas Davis Jr died from burns after three children played with matches. Other children, ages 4 and 38, were present as the mother Mrs Thomes Davis was away at the time.
Mrs. Caroline Matte 80 of Charles City died from injuries and shock after her hand was caught in an electric washing machine wringer.
The proposal to issue and sell 150000 shares of common stock to qualified associates is approved by the board of directors at its discretion with a limit that not more than half may be offered in any single year.
President Roosevelt’s address inaugurating the inter American conference for maintenance of peace in Buenos Aires drew enthusiastic reactions. Argentine Foreign Minister Saavera Lamas called it inspiring while Chilean Foreign Minister Miguel Cruchaga Teocornal praised its optimism for peace. Britain France and Italy hailed the speech as a major contribution to defending democracy against fascism and expansion of the democratic bloc in Europe.
The Chamber of Commerce contracted with the Oetjen seed store for the trees and Edgar and Walter Oetjen assisted in placing them. Additional trees will be added as holders are completed and materials arrive. More decorations and lights will be installed in the park entrances this week.
Two hundred entries have been made for the Christmas parade with more expected as the committee led by L. W. Soule promotes the event. Children from Washington and county schools are urged to enter. each participant receives a free motion picture show at the State theater and several cash prizes are offered in various divisions.
Iowa Southern Utilities reports nearly fifty miles of new rural lines contracted since last fall around Washington. About 116 new electric customers are expected as payrolls rise to eighty during construction. New extensions include Wayland to Coppock and Crawfordsville toward Havre, with several other village and township lines planned.
Marriages rise with 109 licenses issued in 1936 by the district court clerk, surpassing the prior year’s total of 100. The county’s marriage counts show 48 licenses in 1932, 163 in 1933, and 102 in 1934, with 1936 trending higher as year ends approach.
Washington County Medical Society held a gathering and dinner at the nurses' home last evening. A turkey dinner was served at 6 30 followed by an address on Diabetes by Dr Paul of Iowa City.
The state won a $5 792 judgment against Plymouth County over a fuel tax dispute. Judge R G Rodman ruled the tax applied to the fuel, not the government subdivision, aligning with a supreme court decision.
The Iowa Southern Utilities Co. will invest about $40,000 to adjust phone lines in certain areas. The plan covers construction of new rural lines to improve service and reliability for residents and businesses.
Washington city council prepared for the sale of street improvement bonds totaling 9 785 07 and city improvement bonds of 15 000 to be offered at the December 21 meeting. The street bonds will anticipate special assessments and fund street surfacing costs while the city bonds cover the city share of the improvements. Taxlevies for eight years from 393 75 in 1937 to 2 060 in 1944 will support the principal and interest.
Rebel airplanes bombarded north western Madrid in the fiercest air raid of the war. About 80 people were killed and more than 200 wounded as loyalist forces regained ground after two days of fighting. The attack focused on government-held sectors including the university area.
On the first day of license sales 125 cars were registered at the county treasurer’s office. Eighteen trucks were licensed yesterday. Miss Besse Jones, in charge, said the pace should stay steady daily through year end, with most cars in the county to be numbered by January first.
Wade Carson Wilson aged 65 of West Chester died at Washington county hospital from pneumonia following injuries from a October 8 car accident. Born May 8 1871 in Jackson County Tennessee he leaves wife Oma and multiple children and grandchildren. Funeral services are set for Thursday at L A Jones Funeral Home with burial in Elm Grove Cemetery.
Micorge Jones of Washington son of Mr and Mrs Wit Jones was among several students initiated into the Tau Beta Pi honorary engineering fraternity at the University of Iowa.
