Republican attorney general hopeful Joseph G. Bertroche charged lawmakers and officials with violating state law by not locating the state entomologist at Iowa State University Ames. A single engine plane with four aboard made a forced landing in a thick soybean field eight miles north of Ottumwa Iowa. Pilot Atha M Smith of Garden City Michigan and his wife and two children reported no injuries. The prayer Baptist Church Wayne Michigan owned plane was a total loss. Smith was en route to Denver when he radioed engine trouble and sighted the Rex Johnson farm bean field.
At page 6 the administrator is named for the estate of Mary Keonig. Probate of the will and appointment of executor for the estate of Erwin C. Keonig are specified.
In Benton Harbor Michigan an 18 year old Negro youth Cecil Hunt died from a stomach wound amid a third night of racial violence. Gov George Romney withheld National Guard action but warned outsiders may be involved and state police were dispatched to the scene.
Eight aged Roman Catholic nuns, some crippled or exhausted, crossed into Hong Kong as hundreds of Red Guards gathered at the border. They said they were not mistreated physically but described shock and fatigue after being forced to leave the Sacred Heart School in Peking. Bishop Walsh remains the only foreign clergyman on the mainland.
West Branch businessmen protest plans to expand the Hoover national historic site by purchasing land along Main Street. The National Park Service halted option purchases while the City Council considers a 35-signature petition, delaying a two block area that could host a federal building a post office and a park. The Park Service has four of thirty options secured.
Police Chief Clarence See announced 25 year old Robert Long of Washington was hired to fill the vacancy created by Ronald Rich who left for the county sheriff's office. The department remains two officers below strength with one vacancy still to fill and applications are welcome at the police department.
Vern Martin, former Iowa Republican State Chairman, endorses William G. Murray for the GOP gubernatorial nomination. He criticizes opponent Robert K. Beck’s comments as presumptuous and says Murray offers the precise experience Iowa needs. Martin cites Murray's positive campaign, voter support, and three months of “look and listen” as proof of qualification.
Nomination papers have been filed for only one candidate in the Washington Community School district election. Stan Kiesey notes Henry Soucek, board member from director area No 2, filed his papers. Deadline is Friday September 2. Robert Kleese, incumbent, is expected to file for the director area in the south part of the district. There are only two directors to be elected this year.
Senate Democratic Leader Mansfield and colleagues after talks with President Johnson propose a substantial reduction of U S forces permanently stationed in Europe. The plan cites Western Europe's recovery and NATO allies' shifted commitments as the basis for changing posture. Mansfield notes France has pressed for withdrawal of forces from its soil.
One man died and 11 were wounded when a Claymore mine exploded in Can Tho in the Mekong Delta as Viet Cong terrorists sought to disrupt the Sept. 11 assembly elections. Raiders fired mortars near Can Tho and bomb threats escalated security around American and Vietnamese officials.
